Burleigh F. Spalding

Burleigh Folsom Spalding (born December 3, 1853 in Craftsbury , Orleans County , Vermont , † March 17, 1934 in Fargo , North Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the first and from 1903 to 1905 the second constituency of the state of North Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early Years and Advancement in North Dakota

Burleigh Spalding attended the Lyndon Literary Institute in Vermont and later studied at Norwich University in Northfield until 1877 . After studying law in Montpelier , he was admitted to the bar in 1880. He then started to work in his new job in Fargo, Dakota Territory .

Spalding was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1882 and 1884 he was a school councilor ( Superintendent of Public Instructions ) in Cass County . In 1883 he was a member of the commission that planned the transfer of the capital of the territory from Yankton to Bismarck and prepared the construction of the new capital. In 1889, Spalding was a member of the North Dakota Constituent Assembly. Between 1892 and 1894 he was chairman of his party in North Dakota and from 1896 to 1898 he led the Republicans in Cass County.

Spalding in the US Congress

In the congressional election of 1898, Burleigh Spalding was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives. There he took over from Martin N. Johnson on March 4, 1899 . Spalding held this mandate until March 3, 1901. He did not stand for election in 1900. In the congressional elections of 1902 he ran for the seat of the newly created second electoral district of North Dakota. He represented this between March 4, 1903 and March 3, 1905 in Congress . In 1904 he was no longer nominated by his party. Therefore, his seat went to Asle Gronna in March 1905 .

Another résumé

In 1907, Burleigh Spalding became a judge on the North Dakota Supreme Court. Between 1911 and 1915, as Chief Justice, he was its presiding judge. He then worked as a lawyer. Spalding, who attended almost every local Republican party conference in North Dakota between 1888 and 1933, was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1924, at which incumbent Calvin Coolidge was again nominated as a presidential candidate. Burleigh Spalding died in March 1934.
