history

Houses in the center of Craftsbury

The town was given as a grant to Ebenezer Crafts, Timothy Newell, and 62 others in 1780. The constituent meeting took place on August 23, 1781. It was one of the first populated places in the area. The first name of the place was Minden, but only ten years later it was renamed Craftsbury in honor of Ebenezer Crafts, who was the first settler to reach the town in the summer of 1788. Craftsbury quickly became an important trading center, but there were also clashes with Indians. This led to the establishment of various settlement sites: Craftsbury Village in the valley, East Craftsbury on an elevation and Craftsbury Common on top of a hill. The highest population reached Craftsbury in 1860 with 1413, in 1970 it reached a low point with 632 people. Since then, the population has increased again.
