history

The grant for Hardwick was proclaimed on November 7, 1780. It was fixed on August 19, 1781 in favor of Danforth Keyes and others, in the usual size of 23,040 acres . Immediately after the grant was set, there was an attempt to settle, but it failed. Permanent settlement started in 1790. In 1795 the constituent assembly of the town took place.

The name "Hardwick" was adopted from the hometown of many settlers: Hardwick , Massachusetts . In the course of the settlement history, three places in the county have borne this name (read: this postal address). The opening of the first post office of this name took place in 1810 in what is now East Hardwick, which was then called "Stevensville". The post office changed its name in 1846, but with a typo: “Set ph ens”. After three months, the post office was renamed back to "Hardwick". Until 1867, the name of the place and the post office changed several times between "Hardwick" and "East Hardwick", which has remained the last name since then. In 1864 the post office in what is now North Hardwick had adopted the name "Hardwick", which was taken over in 1867 with the closure of the post office from a third place in the area, what was then South Harwick (until 1842: Lamoilleville). Since then, this settlement has been the official bearer of the name.

Hartwick's residents make their living mainly from agriculture and forestry; until around 1910 it was also known for its granite production.
