history

The Town of Cabot was founded on August 17, 1780. The town was named after the later wife of Major Lyman Hitchcock, Sophia Cabot. Hitchcock, an officer in the Continental Army , had the grant for Cabot and after the future father-in-law had visited the country, he allowed the wedding. Sophia Cabot was descended from the explorers Sebastiano Caboto and Giovanni Caboto . The 1790 census reports that Lyman Hitchcock's household consisted of four people. Cabot originally belonged to Caledonia County , later to Washington County.

The first settler in Cabot was Benjamin Webster, who built a small cabin for himself and his family in 1783, which he brought from New Hampshire the following spring. In 1787 the first meeting was called to organize the town. The first inn, the Yellow House, opened a little later. The city councilors were elected for the first time on February 5, 1788. The first school was inaugurated in 1792. After the forest was cleared, potatoes could be grown in the fields and whiskey was distilled from them. The whiskey was sold to Boston and Portland and later smuggled into Canada.

Mill builder Thomas Lyford built the first sawmill on the Winooski River in 1789. Others followed, as well as some shops, a starch factory, forges and a small foundry. A donation in 1790 from Major Hichcock, Captain Jesse Levenworth and Asa Douglas shifted the center of the town from Cabot Plain to Cabot Center, and later to Cabot Village. Another settlement emerged with Lower Cabot. The West Hill area originally consisted of meadows. In 1820, Avery Atkins purchased land and built a dam to damm the West Hill Brook. He used the water power for a sawmill and a grain mill. The reservoir is called West Hill Pond. Further settlements emerged with East Cabot, Hookerville and Peterville along the Molly Brooks.

Religions

The Congregational Church founded in 1806 and the Methodist Church founded by Cabot in 1822 merged to form the Cabot United Church in 1828 .
