history

The town was proclaimed on June 7, 1763 as part of the New Hampshire Grants by Governor Benning Wentworth , but was not permanently settled until 1784. The first city assembly, with which the administrative independence of the town was established, took place on March 31, 1790. Waterbury was primarily used for agriculture, but two larger watercourses offered the possibility of building grain and wood mills as well. A local industry quickly developed from this, some of which also had an innovative effect. The Colby brothers , later important Vermont entrepreneurs, founded the first willow bark peeling factory here from 1856 in a disused schnapps distillery; Willow was an indispensable basis for the construction of boxes and baskets back then. The town recorded a significant increase in area at the end of October 1850 when some areas from the neighboring town of Middlesex were added to it, which was then newly cut.

As early as 1849 Waterbury was connected to the growing rail network of the United States via the Windsor – Burlington railway, but this was hardly used by local industry. The passenger traffic, however, was considerable. In 1897, the Waterbury station was therefore also served by an interurban tram, the Waterbury – Stowe tram, which existed until 1932. The increasing individual traffic and the decreasing number of transports led to a neglect of the route until 1966 the passenger traffic was stopped for safety reasons. After an initial renovation of the line, Waterbury was connected to the Canadian metropolis of Montreal between 1977 and 1995 with the express train The Montrealer . In 1995 this train connection was discontinued and replaced by the express train The Vermonter , which has since connected the community with Washington.

Religions

The religious communities are a Roman Catholic , a Wesleyan congregation and a branch of the United Church of Christ ; there are also two Methodist churches.
