However, the first certificate was not issued until August 14, 1781, presumably because the fees had not been paid by then. It was the first grant to be granted by the General Assembly.
The first town meeting in Montpelier took place on March 29, 1791. Until 1849, when the Town of East Montpelier broke away from Montpelier on January 1st, it was the Town Meeting of Montpelier.
Three large settlements, Montpelier Village, East Montpelier Village and North Montpelier Village, emerged along the Winooski River and its tributaries. With the help of water power, grist mills, sawmills and other small industries were operated.
In addition to agriculture, there was a wool spinning mill, tanneries, brickworks, blacksmiths and shoe shops, as well as a distillery and starch factories in the middle of the 19th century. From 1890 to 1930 also a granite factory. In the early 1870s, the Montpelier and Wells River Railroad was built.
Today the town office is located in a former schoolhouse in the East Village.
