The Vermont General Assembly is the state legislature of the US state of Vermont . It is known as the General Assembly , but it is usually called the Legislature , which is also a self-designation. The General Assembly is a bicameral system . It consists of the 150 members of the Vermont House of Representatives and the 30 members of the Vermont Senate . House members come from districts that have one or two MPs. 58 districts have one representative, 46 districts have two representatives. The 30 senators come from 13 districts, each of which has several senators elected. The meeting place for the General Assembly is the Vermont State House in Montpelier . The two-year session begins on the first Wednesday following the first Monday in January. This has been done since 1915, beginning in the odd years.

elections

The General Assembly elections take place in November of every even year. The term of office of MPs in the House of Representatives and Senators is two years. The prerequisite is that the residence must have been in the state two years prior to the election and in the district for one year prior to the election in order to be able to run for either house.

The President of Parliament presides over the House of Representatives and the Vice-Governor presides over the Senate. The President of the Senate only has one casting vote; the President usually presides over the Senate pro tempore .

Functions

The General Assembly has the power to legislate, subject to the governor's right of veto . However, this veto can be overridden if there is a two-thirds majority in every house.

It has sole power to propose constitutional amendments to the Vermont Constitution . A change must be decided in the Senate with a two-thirds majority. After she passes the Senate, she must get a majority in the House of Representatives. Any change that has gone through both houses must be passed again after a new election, first in the Senate, then in the House of Representatives. The proposed change must then be approved by a majority of the state's voters in a referendum .

For example, constitutional amendments are introduced by the Senate outside of the presidential election years, but not during the presidential election.

history

Until 1915, the term of office began in autumn. It has since started in January. The General Assembly takes a one-week break when the town meetings take place in March.
