Şenol Ustaömer (born August 18, 1961 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He was one of the most important and consistent members of the Trabzonspor team that became the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship, and was a member of that club's great team for eight seasons, which, nicknamed Karadeniz Fırtınası , dominated Turkish football for a decade from 1975 onwards . From 1988 to 1993 he played for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and was an important member of the team that became champions with 103 goals in the 1988/89 season and therefore went down in the club's history as the championship team with 103 goals . Ustaömer played mainly in defense as a left full-back , but was also used a few times in defensive midfield . Especially as a left full-back, he scored an unusually high number of goals for the position. Since when he was admitted to Trabzonspor in the summer of 1980, Şenol Güneş was another Şenol in the team squad and this was older, Ustaömer was henceforth referred to as Küçük Şenol (dt .: The little Şenol) and Güneş as Büyük Şenol (dt .: The big one Şenol). He kept this nickname even after moving to Fenerbahçe Istanbul.

He was arrested in June 2011 in connection with a stock market scandal and was in custody for about a month.

Ustaömer began with club football in the youth department of Trabzonspor , the most famous and successful club in the Trabzon province. This club was founded in 1967 through the merger of several local clubs and had the intention to represent the Trabzon province in the 1st Lig with local talent . After Trabzonspor was promoted to the first league in the summer of 1974 and also reached the Turkish Cup final for the first time in the club's history , the Turkish championship was surprisingly won in the second first division season . Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the 1st Lig among themselves. The team also won the President's Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup this season . In the 1976/77 season , the club succeeded in defending its title in the Turkish championship and its first title in the Turkish Cup. With this, the club achieved the first Turkish double victory in club history. After these very successful two seasons, the club awarded the championship in the 1977/78 season with a point difference to Fenerbahçe, but was able to get the other two cups. In the two seasons 1978/79 and 1979/80 the Turkish championship was won again.

Ustaömer was then included in the professional squad in the summer of 1980 and made his professional debut in the league game on August 31, 1980 against Rizespor . In the further course of the season he quickly won a regular place and ended the season with 27 league appearances and five league goals. His club managed to defend the title in the Turkish championship in the 1980/81 season . As a result, Trabzonspor was the second club after Galatasaray Istanbul to win the Turkish championship three times in a row. After these successful three seasons Trabzonspor awarded the championship with one point to Beşiktaş and remained without a title even after a long time. Ustaömer remained the undisputed regular player in all these seasons and completed injury or suspension-related absences, excluding all competitive games of his team. After these two unsuccessful seasons, the club invested in new players in the summer of 1983 and brought on aspiring young players such as Hasan Şengün , Hasan Vezir and Kemal Serdar . With these reinforcements, Trabzonspor got off to a good start in the 1983/84 season and fought head-to-head for the Turkish championship with Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul. Before the 26th matchday, Trabzonspor took first place in the table with just one point ahead of the two opponents. Already in the Saturday game of this match day Galatasaray lost 3-0 to Orduspor and thus enabled Trabzonspor to achieve a first preliminary decision towards the championship by an away win against the other direct rivals Fenerbahçe. In the hard-fought game, which was sold out with 26,000 spectators, both teams played a thrilling game. Trabzonspor won the game 1-0 with a goal from Hasan Şengün in the 89th minute. With this victory, the club took an important step towards the championship. For the remaining game days, she confidently kept the point lead and reached the sixth and, for the time being, last championship in the club's history. Ustaömer completed 29 of a possible 30 league games this season and was one of the most important performers of his team. With Trabzonspor, Ustaömer also won the Turkish Football Cup this season and was involved in Trabzonspor's second and last Turkish double victory. After this season, Trabzonspor only remained untitled for two seasons. This led to long-time players like Şenol Güneş and Güngör Şahinkaya ending their careers in the summer of 1987 . Ustaömer was then appointed team captain.

After the hoped-for turnaround did not take place in the 1987/88 season, another revision was carried out in the squad in the summer of 1988. So Ustaömer left his club in June 1988 and moved to the traditional club Fenerbahçe Istanbul for a transfer fee of 75 million Turkish Lira . For the 1988/89 season , Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the 1984/85 season , was hired. In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher and continued to invest in the team by bringing in Şenol Ustaömer, Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Turhan Sofuoğlu , Hasan Vezir , Hakan Tecimer and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. With this team Fenerbahçe played an outstanding season. The season ended ten points ahead of second-placed Galatasaray and won the Turkish championship again after four years. In addition, the team scored 103 goals over the entire season and thus earned a new goal record in the 1st Lig . This team went into the club annals as the championship team with 103 goals . At 48, Ustaömer, together with Toni Schumacher, was the player with the most competitive appearances and became one of the club's most important performers. In the next season, Ustaömer drew in the game played on October 8, 1989 from the 5th matchday against Sakaryaspor to an injury to the meniscus and was therefore the entire rest of the season. In the next three seasons Ustaömer failed to establish themselves as a regular player. After his club went through a troubled time in these seasons and remained untitled, the club management decided in the summer of 1993 to revise the squad.

As a result of a squad revision, Ustaömer left Fenerbahçe in the summer of 1993 and moved to the second division Göztepe Izmir . Here he played a season and ended his career.

National team

Ustaömer began his national team career in 1980 with a commitment for the Turkish U-21 national team .

Ekşi was nominated in November 1978 by national coach Yılmaz Gökdel as part of a friendly against the Luxembourg national team for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team and made his international debut in this encounter. By April 1985 he completed two more A-internationals, his last on April 3, 1985 in the qualifying game of the 1986 World Cup against the Romanian national team .

In 1987 and 1988 Ustaömer completed ten international games for his country's Olympic team.

Coaching career

Ustaömer began his coaching career in 1997 at Çanakkale Dardanelspor as an assistant coach and assisted the head coach Erdoğan Arıca . After staying in this position until the summer of 1998, he then took over the Istanbul second division club Kartalspor as head coach. He left this club after just nine match days and was introduced to Üsküdar Anadolu 1908 SK in November 1998 as the new head coach.

In March 1999 Ustaömer left Üsküdar Anadolu and started working as a junior coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul . As early as the next summer of 1999, he changed his employer again and began to look after Dardanelspor as head coach. Here he was released in December 1999.

After Ustaömer had remained without a coaching job for the next two years, he started the Istanbul third division team in October 2001 and looked after it until summer 2003.

In spring 2004 he worked at Kayseri Erciyesspor as an assistant trainer and once again assisted Erdoğan Arıca.

From 2007 he began the Turkish U-17 national team to serve as head coach and remained in that activity until the summer of 2011. In the summer of 2011, he was to be involved on suspicion in a stock manipulation scandal along with former players like Engin İpekoğlu and Mecnur Çolak to arrested and therefore not continuing his activity. After spending a month in detention, he was released in July 2011.

From the spring of 2015 he started to coach the Turkish U-15 national team.
