Engin İpekoğlu (born June 7, 1961 in Izmir , Turkey ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper and current coach .

Player career

He started his football career at the Austrian club Prater SV in 1978. Five years later he joined the youth team at Sakaryaspor . After three seasons İpekoğlu moved into the first team and was Turkish Cup winner in the 1987/87 season . For the 1989/90 season Engin İpekoğlu went to Beşiktaş Istanbul . With the black and white , the goalkeeper was twice Turkish champion , in 1990 and 1991. He also won the Turkish Cup again in 1990 with Beşiktaş.

After his second league title in 1991, he went on to local rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . There İpekoğlu was immediately the goalkeeper and played until his injury against Kayserispor in the 1994/95 season in this role. After his injury, he was only second choice. In 1996 he was the third and last time Turkish champion with Fenerbahçe. Then he left the blue-yellow and went to Çanakkale Dardanelspor . For Dardanelspor, İpekoğlu guarded the gate for three years. In 1999 he returned to Fenerbahçe Istanbul. The goalkeeper played seven games in his final season with Fenerbahçe, ending his playing career in 2000.

İpekoğlu guarded the goal of the Turkish national team 32 times between 1989 and 1999.

Coaching career

Engin İpekoğlu began his coaching career as assistant coach to Raşit Çetiner in the Turkish U-21 national team . After Raşit Çetiner was coach of Bursaspor in 2004/05 , İpekoğlu followed him. Çetiner resigned after the 11th match day of the 2006/07 season as coach of Bursaspors, İpekoğlu succeeded his mentor and coached the team for one season. For the 2007/08 season he moved to the second division Karşıyaka SK . Due to problems in the team, he resigned as coach of the green-reds shortly after the start of the season. Engin İpekoğlu Kocaelispor took over four game days before the end of the season . He won the last four games with his team and was the first to complete the season and thus rose to the Süper Lig .

In 2010, İpekoğlu became assistant coach of Turkey at the side of Guus Hiddink and held this position until December 2011.

For the 2012/13 season he took over the Turkish second division club Denizlispor . The club's board announced the dismissal of İpekoğlu after the 9th match day. The reason given was the disappointing start of the season from the club's point of view.

At the end of November 2013 he became the head coach of the second division club Fethiyespor . In his first game he was able to retract a surprising 2-1 win in the cup match against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the championship, however, he could not save the club from relegation. In September 2014 he left the club.

In the winter break of 2014/15 he was presented again as head coach at Denizlispor. İpekoğlu took over from the resigned Özcan Bizati . After just one month and four games without a win, he resigned from his position. In November 2015 he was hired as the new head coach at the second division side Adanaspor . İpekoğlu led the team to the championship and thus to promotion to the Süper Lig . Due to differences of opinion regarding new signings, he terminated his contract a few days before the start of the 2016/17 season after mutual agreement with the club's management.

In October 2016, he became the head coach of Adana Demirspor . He was responsible for this club until the end of April 2017.
