history

founding

The Sakaryaspor association emerged from the union of İdmanyurdu , Güneşspor , Ada Gençlik and Gençlerbirliği , green and black were chosen as the colors. On June 17, 1965, Ethem Boran was elected the first president of the newly formed Sakaryaspor club.

The first season (1965/66)

The team's first coach was Fikret Aldinç. The first squad consisted of the following players: Sarı İhsan, Metin Fıçıcıgil, Mikail, Pıçır İsmet, Kaleci Sadettin, Rıfkı Manav, Musa Çetiner, Faruk, Zeki Aydıntepe, Hüsnü Taşdemir, Arifiyeli İhsan Ertem, Arifiyeli İhsan. In the following years Sakaryaspor got the chance to rise several times, but they never made it due to the lack of experience. Due to the success, however, Sakaryaspor increased its level of awareness.

1st division (1982–1988)

After 17 years, Sakaryaspor finally made the hoped-for promotion with a strong squad and many star players. Sakaryaspor also celebrated great successes in their first season in the Süper Lig and became the surprise team. The club stayed in the Süper Lig for five years, but then rose due to financial problems. With the new president Aydin Zengin , however, the immediate resurgence succeeded.

While the club was in the middle of the table in the 1987/88 season, great successes were celebrated at Fortis Türkiye Kupasi . Sakaryaspor was able to prevail against the greats like Beşiktaş Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul and finally won the cup in the final against Samsunspor . Thus, the club celebrated its greatest success and also obtained the right to participate in the UEFA Cup . In this they reached the 2nd round, but could not prevail against the German representative Eintracht Frankfurt .

Modern times

In recent years Sakaryaspor could not really establish itself in the top division. You mostly missed promotion to the playoffs of the second division and could not qualify for the first division. With a few exceptions, Sakaryaspor has been in the second division since 1990, before the club was promoted again in modern times after five seasons in the 2004/2005 season. In the same year, however, they said goodbye to the league when they were sixteenth in the table, before being promoted again for the 2006/2007 season. The same picture as with the relegation two years earlier was repeated in 2007 and after the 30th matchday the relegation of Sakaryaspor was certain. The team was promoted again to the TFF 1st Lig at the end of the 2010/11 season .

Promoted to the 1st Lig, the club was banned from transfers by the national football association, which meant that the season had to get along with the available players or with the players from the reserve and youth team. The club quickly slipped into a relegation zone and missed relegation at the end of the season. With relegation, several young talents who had proven themselves in the relegation battle such as Berat Çetinkaya , Salih Dursun , Yasin Görkem Arslan and Şaban Özel left the club.

After the club struggled with major financial problems for several years, a new election was announced in February 2013. It was also mentioned that if this election should not produce a new board, the club would be dissolved. This choice was unsuccessful, so fans took over the management of the club and prevented the club from closing. After the 2-4 home defeat against Pendikspor on matchday 28, the club was relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig for the first time in its history .

The club ended the fourth division season of 2016/17 with the play-off victory of Group 3 and thus returned to the TFF 2. Lig after a five-year absence .
