Ankara Demirspor is a Turkish football club from Ankara . The club was a founding member of the top Turkish league and played a total of 13 seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s . In the all-time table of the Süper Lig , the club is 31st. With this placement, the club is after MKE Ankaragücü and Gençlerbirliği Ankara the third most successful club in the capital Ankara, which were active in the highest Turkish league.
history
Foundation and the first three decants
Ankara Demirspor was founded on March 16, 1932 as a company sports club of the state railway company of Turkey (TCDD for short; Turkish Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları ). The Ankara Club became champions in 1938, 1943, 1947 and 1948.
Founding member of the Süper Lig and first relegation to the TFF 1st Lig
In the summer of 1959, Ankara Demirspor was one of the founding members of the then newly created, for the first time supraregional top Turkish league, today's Süper Lig . In the first three seasons of this league, the club always occupied a place in the table in the upper half of the table. Then you always occupied a middle table position in the league. In the 1961/62 season , the club provided Fikri Elma, the top scorer of the Süper Lig, and attracted attention. So far only players from the Istanbul clubs have managed to win this trophy.
At the beginning of the 1960s, the Turkish Football Association, with the support of the Turkish government at the time, launched a project aimed at involving all of Turkey's provinces in professional football. So far, with Istanbul , Izmir and the capital Ankara, only the three largest cities in Turkey have provided all teams in the top division. In order to counteract this situation, all governors and notables of all provinces were encouraged to found football clubs and to submit an application to participate in the second highest division, today's TFF 1. Lig , introduced in the summer of 1963 . After the establishment of the second highest league, the first provincial clubs managed to move up to the 1st Lig (today's name Süper Lig) and establish themselves here. After this power shift, some teams from the cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara could no longer keep up and lost their former strength. Ankara Demirspor was among these clubs. After playing against relegation again and again towards the end of the 1960s, relegation failed in the summer of 1971 and for the first time in the club's history they rose to the 2nd Lig (today's name TFF 1st Lig). The club never managed to return to the first division.
The second division and relegation to the amateur league
Even in the second highest division, Ankara Demirspor failed to establish itself in the upper half of the table. Although they occupied top positions in the table in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons, and even third in the 1974/75 season , the following years were more likely to be played against relegation. After the third highest division was abolished in the summer of 1980 and combined with the second highest division, Ankara Demirspor was able to extend its participation in the 2nd league. In the summer of 1983, relegation failed here too and they were relegated to the regional amateur league.
Participation in the TFF 3rd Lig and promotion to the 2nd Lig
In the summer of 1984, the 3rd Lig, which was abolished four years ago, was reintroduced. Ankara Demirspor took part in professional football again after a year in the amateur league. Here the club established itself in the upper quarter of the table and missed promotion to the 2nd league several times. The 1995/96 season ended as champions of the 3rd league and rose again to the second highest division after fourteen years of abstinence.
Relegation from the 2nd to the 4th league
After the promotion to today's TFF 1. Lig, the club always played against relegation. The game mode of the league at the time was also decisive for this situation. It was held in five groups in two stages. In the last stage the groups consisted of eight teams, of which the last two were relegated. After the club managed to stay out of the league twice, it failed in the 1998/99 season .
For the next seven seasons, the club played in the third highest division of the TFF 2nd Lig . In the summer of 2006/07, the club finished the league as seventh in the group 4. and thus rose to the TFF 3. Lig . Since then, the club has played in this fourth-highest Turkish league.
Modern times
In the fourth division season 2014/15 Demirspor played from the beginning of the season to lead the table and ended the first half of the season as autumn champions . On matchday 31, the club awarded the lead to Üsküdar Anadolu 1908 SK . finished the season behind this as runner-up and qualified for the play-off phase. In the play-offs the team reached the final, defeated Sakaryaspor 2-0 and returned to the TFF 2nd Lig after nine years of abstinence . After failing to stay in the 3rd Turkish league in summer 2016, the club returned to the TFF 3rd Lig for the 2016/17 season.
