Yusuf Tepekule (born January 15, 1968 in Izmir , Turkey ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his work for Karşıyaka SK and Galatasaray Istanbul , he is associated with these clubs. After moving to Galatasaray, he was nicknamed Küçük Yusuf (in English: Little Yusuf ). At that time it was common in Turkish football to only name footballers by their first names. Since a Yusuf already existed at Galatasaray with Yusuf Altıntaş and he was older, Tepekule was referred to as the Little Yusuf and Altıntaş as Büyük Yusuf (in English: The great Yusuf ).

Player career

society

Tepekule began with club football in the youth of Karşıyaka SK and rose to the summer of 1987 with a professional contract provided in the squad of the professional team. Here he came to the former first division club to sporadic appearances in the league and in the cup competition. It was not until the 1989/90 season that he won a regular place at the beginning of the season and gradually rose to become a top performer. After Karşıyaka missed relegation in the summer of 1991 and relegated to the TFF 1st Lig , Tepekule was loyal to the club and did not leave the club. A year later they reached the second division championship and thus the direct return to the Süper Lig .

After several clubs had Tepekule on their transfer list in the summer of 1993, he and his teammate Cihat Arslan moved to the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . Galatasaray had just hired a new coach in Karl-Heinz Feldkamp and wanted to carry out a revision in the squad with him. Feldkamp turned the team inside out and sorted out many seasoned professionals and replaced them with new players. Tepekule was one of the new players with whom Feldkamp created his new team. The team, which had played disappointingly in previous years, immediately became champions of the Süper Lig under Feldkamp , winners of the Turkish soccer cup and winners of the Turkish soccer supercup . In the 1993/94 season he managed to defend the championship title with his team. In the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League season, the big favorites Manchester United were thrown out of the competition in the second round and qualified as the first Turkish team in the newly designed UEFA Champions League . In the 1994/95 season they reached the autumn championship of the Süper Lig with the new coach Reinhard Saftig and participated successfully in the Champions League again. With the beginning of the second half of the season, the team experienced an enormous drop in performance and moved away from the top of the table. Then Saftig was dismissed as the first coach in the club's history in the current season and the season was ended with the interim coach Müfit Erkasap .

For the 1995/96 season, Scottish coach Graeme Souness took over Galatasaray. Under this coach, Tepekule played no role in the team planning and was mostly on the substitute bench. He was then loaned to his old club Karşıyaka for the second half of the season.

After the club played a rather disappointing season under Souness, the club's board decided to revise the squad. For this purpose, the Turkish national coach Fatih Terim was hired as a coach for the new season . Under this coach Tepekule took part in the pre-season camp and also played in the TSYD Kupası pre-season tournament . Before the start of the season, Terim informed him that he was not planning with him and suggested a change. Tepekule made use of this suggestion and left the club in the direction of league competitor Vanspor .

Tepekule played two seasons for Vanspor and left the club after the unsuccessful relegation in the summer of 1998.

For the upcoming season he agreed with the second division Yimpaş Yozgatspor . The 1999/2000 season he closed with Yozgatspor as champions of the TFF 1st Lig and rose to the Süper Lig for the first time in the club's history . Tepekules expiring contract was extended for another year, but he was not used in the 2000/01 season. After this season he ended his active football career in summer 2001.

National team

Due to his shown performances at Galatasaray Istanbul he was nominated by the then national coach Fatih Terim as part of a 1994 World Cup qualifying game against Norway in the squad of the Turkish national team . In this game of November 10, 1993 he played in the starting line-up and made his international debut.

He made his second and last international match during the friendly against the Czech Republic .

For the Euro 1996 qualifying encounter against the Icelandic national team , he was called up for the last time in the squad, but was on the bench during this game.

Coaching career

After the end of his active football player career, Tepekule made the decision to work as a football coach in the future. His first activity was from summer 2002 at Karşıyaka SK , the club from whose offspring he rose to professional players, as a youth coach.

In the summer of 2003 he took over the position of assistant coach at the then fourth division club Akhisar Belediyespor .

From the 2004/05 season he began to work with his former teammate Uğur Tütüneker from his time at Galatasaray Istanbul and to assist him as an assistant coach. One after the other, both Istanbul BB , İstanbulspor and Yozgatspor looked after .

From November 2006 to May 2007 he worked at Karşıyaka as an assistant trainer and assisted the head trainer Turgut Uçar .

For the 2008/09 season he worked for the first time in his coaching career as head coach and looked after the fourth division team Ankara Demirspor . He left this club during the winter break and instead took over Darıca Gençlerbirliği until the end of the season .
