The İstanbul Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü ( officially Medipol Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü due to a name sponsorship ), commonly known in German-speaking countries as Istanbul Başakşehir , is a Turkish football club from the Istanbul district of Başakşehir . Until the summer of 2014, the club was the football department of the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor sports club , the operating team of the Istanbul city administration. The football division of this club was then spun off, converted into an independent company and renamed to its current name. With the name change, the club also moved to Başakşehir and has been the district team for this district ever since.

The association was founded in 1990 by the then mayor of Istanbul, Nurettin Sözen .

Promotion to the Süper Lig

With the promotion to the Süper Lig in 2007, the still young football club Istanbul BB experienced its greatest success in the club's history. The first season in the top division of Turkish professional football went well. This is how Abdullah Avcı's team managed to annoy the three big Istanbul clubs. In the opening game of the 2007/08 season , Fenerbahçe Istanbul, the reigning champions and city rivals, came to the Ataturk Olympic Stadium . Istanbul BB beat Fener 2-0 and created the first surprise of the season.

In the second half of the season they reached a draw against Fenerbahçe. Beşiktaş Istanbul fared no better against Istanbul BB. The promoted team defeated the black and whites 2-1 at home and drew away at the Inönü stadium . Against Galatasaray Istanbul , the team won a draw in the Ali Sami Yen Stadium . In the second half of the season, however, they had to admit defeat with a clear 3-0 defeat against Gala .

The team ended the season in 12th place. The team improved steadily. In the 2008/09 season they finished ninth, one season later sixth. The 2010/11 season ended in 12th place and the club moved into the Turkish Cup final for the first time in club history . On November 17, 2011, the head coach Abdullah Avcı left the club. He became the coach of Turkey .

Developments in recent years

At the end of the 2012/13 season, Istanbul BB took 16th place and rose again to the TFF 1st Lig after six years of participation in the first division . In the second division, the club settled relatively early in the 2013/14 season under the leadership of head coach Cihat Arslan at the top of the table and ended the league as autumn champions. On matchday 36, two game days before the end of the season, Istanbul BB secured the league championship with a 4-0 away win against Şanlıurfaspor and thus a direct return to the Süper Lig . In the following season you could set up a club record with fourth place in the table.

In January 2015 the club signed a name sponsorship agreement with the hospital chain Medipol for a year and a half. After that, the club will have the company name in its club name for the term of four years and will therefore be called Medipol Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü .

The 2015/16 season ended the Istanbul club in fourth place and in the following season they could become runner-up. In the 2019/20 season, the club achieved the greatest success in its history to date: winning the Turkish football championship.

Relation to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

The club is closely associated with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his AKP party . Erdoğan said he was involved in founding the association. Club president Göksel Gümüşdağ is a relative by marriage of the Erdoğans family. The main and name sponsor Medipol is also led by Erdoğan's Minister of Health and confidante Fahrettin Koca . The number “12” on the back is also no longer given, as Erdogan wore it at the stadium's opening game.

Stadion

Since its inception, the club has played its home games in various Istanbul stadiums such as Çetin Emeç Stadium and Maltepe Stadium . With the first division promotion in the summer of 2007, the club began to play its home games in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium .

After the club achieved direct promotion back to the Süper Lig in the 2014/15 season , then changed its name to Istanbul Başakşehir FK and moved to the Istanbul district of Başakşehir , it started the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadı, which was completed in summer 2014, with 17,319 seats as a new home to use.
