Okan Buruk (born October 19, 1973 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish football coach and former player. His older brother Fuat Buruk was also active as a professional football player.
Player career
In 1991 Buruk played for the first time as a professional footballer for Galatasaray Istanbul . With Galatasaray, Okan has won a variety of titles, including six league titles, four cup wins, a UEFA Cup and a UEFA Supercup title . Okan Buruk is one of the few Turkish players that their money in the Italian Serie A earned. In February 2001 the midfielder signed a contract with Inter Milan together with his club colleague Emre Belözoğlu . However, he had great adjustment problems, especially he often got into trouble with his team-mate Marco Materazzi .
In July 2004 he returned to the Süper Lig and signed a two-year contract with Beşiktaş Istanbul . In 2006 he finally moved back to Galatasaray Istanbul . After his contract had expired on June 30, 2008 and Galatasaray did not present him a new offer, Buruk moved to city and league rivals Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor .
Functional and coaching career
He ended his career after two years with Istanbul BB. From August 2010 to November 2011 Buruk was the team manager of the Turkish national football team. With Abdullah Avcı as coach of the Turkish national football team, Buruk became his assistant coach. After Avcı resigned in August 2013, Buruk was not taken over by the new national coach Fatih Terim .
On October 28, 2013, Okan Buruk became chief trainer at Sanica Boru Elazığspor . With his club Buruk preserved the chance of relegation until the penultimate matchday of the season and then missed him. At the end of the season, he dissolved his contract by mutual agreement with the club management and left Elazığspor. Since Buruk did not have the necessary coaching license while working at Elazığspor, he worked unofficially as head coach, while İrfan Saraloğlu was given as the official head coach of the association .
For the 2013/14 season he took over the first division club Gaziantepspor . At this club Buruk had to form a new team with a majority of young and inexperienced players. The club had to release a large part of its squad due to financial difficulties and instead hired inexpensive and unknown players. Buruk managed to put together a strong team with these players and showed a successful performance with them. Contrary to many expectations, the team secured relegation early on and ended the season in 10th place in the table.
After the end of the 2014/15 season, Buruk dissolved his contract with Gaziantepspor by mutual agreement and switched to the newly promoted Kayserispor . A few days later, Buruk resigned from his post after new elections were decided at Kayserispor. On October 25, 2015, Buruk became the coach of Medicana Sivasspor .
For the 2016/17 season he took over the second division Göztepe Izmir and left it prematurely in March 2017. A few days after his resignation, he was hired by the first division club Akhisar Belediyespor as head coach. With this club he won the Turkish club cup competition in 2018 with a 3-2 final victory over Fenerbahce Istanbul .
For the 2019/20 season he moved to league rivals Istanbul Başakşehir FK .
