Bülent Korkmaz (born November 24, 1968 in Malatya ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as its own generation, he is very strongly associated with this club and viewed by club and fan sites as one of the most important personalities in the club's history.
Player career
society
Korkmaz started club soccer in the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul . Here, in the mid-1980s, the German trainer Jupp Derwall took over the coaching position and, in addition to his work for the professional team, also renewed the club's junior department and adjusted talent promotion to German standards. In this context, later professional players such as Korkmaz, his brother Mert Korkmaz , Tugay Kerimoğlu and Suat Kaya were trained in the Galatasarays youth department. Korkmaz was added to the professional squad for the 1987/88 season together with Kerimoğlu by Derwall's successor and former assistant coach Mustafa Denizli . While Kerimoğlu came to compulsory appearances from the start of the season, Korkmaz only made his professional debut in February 24, 1988. Here he came on in the cup match against Kayserispor in the 73rd minute for Semih Yuvakuran . In the further course of the season, he completed no further competitive match. This season he won the TSYD Istanbul Cup and the Turkish championship with his club .
He was said to have a rather average footballing talent and to work hard and ambitiously on his successes. His German team-mate Reinhard Stumpf allegedly served as a model for this.
Korkmaz won eight championships and cup wins in Turkey. In addition, he won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup title with Galatasaray in 2000 . In the club as well as in the national team, he was a long-time captain.
National team
On August 17, 2005, he played his last game for the Turkish national football team in Sofia in the friendly between Turkey and Bulgaria .
Coaching career
His first coaching activity was at Gençlerbirliği Ankara as an assistant coach and assisted head coach Mesut Bakkal .
During the winter break of the 2006/07 season, he accepted the offer of head coach from the first division club Kayseri Erciyesspor and replaced the German coach Werner Lorant . Erciyesspor had previously finished the first half of the season with only eleven points and a seven-point difference to the next non-relegation place in the last place in the table. Under Korkmaz, the club got 26 points in the second half of the season, kept their chance of staying up until the last day of the season and finished the second half of the table in 5th place. On the last day of the match, Korkmaz's team had to hope for a clear victory and defeats for their direct relegation rivals Antalyaspor and Çaykur Rizespor . These two clubs had only two points more than Erciyesspor, but would be in front of Erciyesspor in the event of a draw in the last game due to the significantly better goal statistics and thus secure their relegation. Erciyesspor led 1-0 on the last match day against Sivasspor and hoped for defeats of the relegation competitors. While Antalyaspor quickly fell behind in his game, Rizespor fought for a 1-1 draw and held this result over the entire length of the game. After the game of Rizespor had ended, the relegation of Erciyesspor was certain. The team received two more goals in stoppage time and ended the season in penultimate place in the table. Parallel to the relegation battle, Korkmaz led his team to the Turkish Cup final . In the final, his team failed in extra time against eventual runner-up Beşiktaş Istanbul . By participating in the cup final, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in its history . After the end of the season, Korkmaz left the Central Anatolians.
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season Korkmaz was coach at the Turkish first division club Bursaspor . After just nine match days, he was released in Bursa.
In 2007/2008 he took over the coaching position at the Turkish first division club Gençlerbirliği from Ankara , but was dismissed before the end of the season because the team did not meet the high expectations of the fans and the board and was in a relegation battle.
After Michael Skibbe's dismissal at Galatasaray on February 23, 2009, Korkmaz was appointed as the new coach. The original contract ran until 2010, but Korkmaz submitted his termination on June 3, 2009, which was accepted by the board. After his resignation from Galatasaray Istanbul, Korkmaz coached the Azerbaijani club FK Baku . On November 8th 2011 it was announced that Korkmaz is coach of Kardemir Karabükspor . Although Karabükspor with Bülent Korkmaz as coach scored 32 points in the second half of the season, and thus was the third best team in the second half of the season after Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahce Istanbul, and also reached the semi-finals in the Turkish Cup, the club separated from the coach in early May .
On November 13, 2012 Korkmaz was coach at the first division Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor . With this club he failed to stay up at the end of the season. So he was then replaced by Cihat Arslan .
For the 2014/15 season he took over the Central Anatolian second division club Kayseri Erciyesspor for the second time in his career . Although he had not signed an official contract a long time after this press release, he already looked after the club at the pre-season preparation camp and was listed as head coach on the club's website. After the 1: 2 home defeat against the direct relegation competitor Eskişehirspor on matchday 10, Korkmaz was dismissed from his position as head coach.
Korkmaz took over the team from Mersin İdman Yurdu in September 2015 . At the beginning of January 2016 he was dismissed by the club's management.
