Fatih Terim (born September 4, 1953 in Adana ) is a Turkish soccer coach and former soccer player . With 20 competitions won, Terim is the most successful coach in Turkish football. Because of his uncompromising leadership style, he has been nicknamed "Imperator" over the years. He is also less often called "Il Terimo" because of his coaching stations in Italy.
Terim was Turkey's record international player for a long time. As a coach, he has been active almost exclusively for Galatasaray Istanbul and the Turkish national team since 1993 . With Galatasaray he won the Turkish Championship four times in a row from 1996 to 2000 and again in 2012, 2013, 2018, 2019 and was three times Turkish Cup winner. In addition, they won the UEFA Cup in 2000, the first ever European title for a Turkish team. From 2013 to 2017 he was the Turkish national coach for the third time. Terim has been training Galatasaray Istanbul for the fourth time since December 2017.
Player career
societies
Fatih Terim began his professional career as a libero with his hometown club and second division side Adana Demirspor in the summer of 1969. His competitive debut was on April 26, 1970 against Toprakofis , followed by three more games by the end of the season. In the following season Terim was still not part of the regular formation and came to five league games. The situation changed with the 1971/72 season , there were 22 games and Terim made his first goal of his career on April 29, 1972 against Uşakspor . The season 1972/73 ended Adana Demirspor as first in the table and thus rose to the first division and this was also the first success for Fatih Terim. The Libero had a significant share in the rise, his teammates Bektaş Yurttaş and Terim scored the most this season with nine goals each. For Adana Demirspor, Fatih Terim played one season in the first division.
For the 1974/75 season Terim moved to Galatasaray Istanbul . In his first season for the yellow-reds Terim was part of the regular team and came to 41 competitive games and scored four goals. He was runner-up with Galatasaray behind Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He won his first cup on June 7, 1975. Galatasaray defeated Trabzonspor 1-0 in Başbakanlık Kupası . A season later, the Libero won the Turkish Cup for the first time. From the 1980/81 season, Fatih Terim was captain of Galatasaray Istanbul. Terim ended his career after the 1984/85 season.
National team
For the Turkish national football team , Fatih Terim completed 51 international matches between 1975 and 1984 and scored two goals.
Coaching career
1987 began his career as a coach. He was responsible for MKE Ankaragücü for two years . After a year at the second division Göztepe Izmir , he was coach of the Turkish U-21 national team from 1990 to 1993 and also assistant coach of the then national coach Sepp Piontek . With the Turkish U-21 national team, he took part in the Mediterranean Games in Languedoc-Roussillon in 1993 and won the gold medal by beating Algeria 2-0 in the final. Two years earlier, Terim won the silver medal at the Mediterranean Games.
National team (1993–1996)
After Piontek resigned as national coach due to lack of success, Terim followed him as coach of the senior national team. Piontek had expressly recommended him as his successor. With a second place in their qualification group behind Switzerland , the Turkish national team qualified for the 1996 European Football Championship . This was her first participation in a European Championship . In the tournament, after losing to Croatia , Portugal and Denmark , they were eliminated from the bottom of the group in the preliminary round. After the tournament, Terim ended his work as national coach and was from July 1996 coach of Galatasaray Istanbul.
First time Galatasaray (1996-2000)
Terim completed the preparation for the 1996/97 season with his team in Germany. On March 12, 1997, the Turkish Supercup from the previous season was held. Galatasaray faced rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Galatasaray won the final 3-0, all goals scored by Hakan Şükür . This was the first trophy for Fatih Terim as head coach. In his first season, as the person in charge of the Red-Yellows, Terim became Turkish champions for the first time. After the season the second win of the Turkish Supercup against Kocaelispor followed .
The championships were defended in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons. In 1999 Terim won the Turkish Cup for the first time. In extra time they defeated Antalyaspor 5: 3. Fatih Terim experienced his most successful season to date in the 1999/2000 season. The club became champions, cup and Supercup winners for the fourth time in a row. By winning the fourth championship, he was now with Ahmet Suat Özyazıcı as coach. On May 17, 2000, he and his players became the first Turkish team to win the UEFA Cup on penalties against Arsenal .
AC Florence and AC Milan (2000–2001)
After four years at Galatasaray, Terim moved to Fiorentina in the summer of 2000 . With the team he was eliminated in the first round of the UEFA Cup against FC Tirol Innsbruck . On February 25, 2001, he resigned from his position as coach because of a dispute with President Vittorio Cecchi Gori after he had announced in January that he would not renew his contract, which was running out at the end of the season. After he had announced his departure at the end of the season, Fiorentina won none of the six following league games and fell in the table from fourth to tenth place. Under his successor Roberto Mancini , Fiorentina won the final of the Coppa Italia, which was still reached under Terim, and qualified for the 2001/02 UEFA Cup .
For the 2001/02 season Terim was coach of AC Milan , where he was replaced on November 6, 2001 by Carlo Ancelotti .
Second time in Galatasaray (2002-2004)
In the summer of 2002 Terim was again coach of Galatasaray Istanbul, with whose team he was runner-up in the 2002/03 season. In March 2004 he was replaced by Gheorghe Hagi after finishing only fifth in the league.
Second time national coach (2005–2009)
On June 26, 2005 Terim was the second time coach of the Turkish national team. In their qualifying group for the 2006 World Cup , the team reached second place behind the Ukraine , but failed in the subsequent relegation games against Switzerland . On January 19, 2006, he initially resigned, but agreed on January 30, 2006 in a meeting with the new association president Haluk Ulusoy to continue his work.
With Terim, Turkey qualified for the 2008 European Football Championship by finishing second in their qualifying group behind Greece . After losing to Portugal and victories against Switzerland and the Czech Republic, Turkey finished second in the group and defeated Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals . In the semi-finals, the team was eliminated from Germany after a 2: 3 defeat. After initial rumors of resignation after the European Championship, which Terim himself had pushed, he extended his contract until 2012.
After Turkey failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup , he resigned as national coach after the game on October 10, 2009 against Belgium , which Turkey lost 2-0. Even before the game, Turkey had no chance of participating in the World Cup. Terim also announced that he would play his last game as national coach in the final qualifying game against Armenia on October 14, 2009 . Association president Mahmut Özgener confirmed Terim's resignation on October 11, 2009. Terim then said that he felt offended by the whistles and insults against him from the Turkish fans and that his players did not deserve any insults either. During the game against Belgium Terim and especially the players Emre Belözoğlu and Arda Turan, who were sitting in the stands, were insulted by the Turkish fans. In addition to the elimination in the qualification, there were allegations against Terim because of the situation around the Turkish-born German players Serdar Taşçı and Mesut Özil that he had not campaigned for their signing for the Turkish national team. Another reference point of his critics was the composition of the squad, in particular Fatih Tekke and Gökdeniz Karadeniz were cited. Although both players had performed well at their clubs, they were not nominated for any game by Terim. At his last press conference on October 19, 2009, he declined to answer related questions and said that, in his opinion, he had not made any mistakes in the cadre nomination.
Third time Galatasaray (2011-2013)
For the 2011/12 season Terim took over Galatasaray Istanbul for the third time. He reshaped the team that had landed in eighth place last season and won the Turkish championship for the fifth time. This makes him the coach with the most Turkish championship titles. The following year he defended the title. However, on September 24, 2013 Terim's contract was terminated by the Galatasaray board.
Third time national team (2013-2017)
On August 22, 2013 Terim was a third time coach of the Turkish national team . He signed a one-year contract as the successor to Abdullah Avcı , who had been released two days earlier . At the same time, he remained the coach of Galatasaray Istanbul until his dismissal there on September 24, 2013. In their qualifying group for the European Football Championship 2016 , Turkey took third place behind the Czech Republic and Iceland and qualified as the best third party directly for the tournament . At the tournament, the team was eliminated after two defeats against Croatia and Spain and a win against the Czech Republic in the preliminary round.
On July 26, 2017, the Turkish Football Association announced the separation from Terim.
Fourth time Galatasaray (2017–)
On December 21, 2017, Terim took over Galatasaray Istanbul for the fourth time. This was announced via the football club's official Twitter account. Terim and his team finished the 2017/18 season in 1st place and became Turkish champions. The following season ended again with winning the Turkish championship, and Galatasaray also won the Turkish Cup. After two years as champions, the 2019/20 season ended in 6th place for Terim and Galatasaray.

Controversy
Fatih Terim was suspended for three games after the 2012 Turkish Supercup final against Fenerbahçe Istanbul because he spoke to referee Tolga Özkalfa after half-time and said to him: “You should concentrate. You are playing with the fate of the game. Do we really have to stick with you like the other teams? "
Because of the terrorist attacks in Gaziantep , Fatih Terim refused to give an interview after the Galatasaray game against Kasımpaşa Istanbul on August 20, 2012, saying: "While our fellow citizens in Gaziantep are suffering and dying, I am unable to speak about football". This was punished by the Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu with a fine of 5,000 Turkish Lira .
On April 6, 2013, in the game against Mersin İdman Yurdu , Terim threw a ball on the ground in response to the referee's decision , which resulted in him being sent to the stands by referee Suleyman Abay. After this decision by the referee, Terim freaked out, ran up to the referee and aggressively protested his decision. He was calmed down by his assistant coach Hasan Şaş and Ümit Davala and had to spend the rest of the game in the stands. He was banned for nine games.
Others
Terim is married and has two daughters. In March 2020, Fatih Terim tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and went into quarantine . After a week, the Turkish trainer was released early from the hospital. The disease was not completely cured at this point.
