1st Lig 1996/97

The 1st Lig 1997/98 was the 40th season of the highest Turkish league in men's football . It started on August 1, 1997 with the game MKE Ankaragücü against Galatasaray Istanbul and ended on May 10, 1998 with the 34th matchday. From December 22, 1997 to January 15, 1998 the season was interrupted by the winter break.

Turkish champion was defending champion Galatasaray Istanbul .

For the 1st Lig 1997/98, the 15 clubs remaining from the previous season were joined by the three promoted teams from the last second division season . The climbers were Karabükspor , Kayserispor and Ankara Şekerspor as the play-off winners of the 2nd Lig. While Karabükspor returned after four years and Ankara Şekerspor after 25 years, Kayserispor managed to rise again immediately.
