Arif Erdem (born January 2, 1972 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish national soccer player of Albanian descent .
Player career
society
The striker played 348 league games for Galatasaray Istanbul , scoring 105 goals. He played 86 games in European competitions with 16 goals. He also appeared for the Turkish national team 60 times and scored eleven times.
He became famous when he scored an important goal in the 1993 Champions League qualifier against Manchester United in the memorable 3: 3 at Old Trafford Stadium , with which Galatasaray qualified for the main round. Otherwise he was known for his free kicks and sprints.
In the league game against Altay Izmir on April 11, 2003 Erdem scored his 100th first division goal and made it into the 100th club of the highest Turkish division.
Besides half a season in Spain, he played for Galatasaray for 14 years. He was one of the most important players in the first Turkish UEFA Cup victory in 2000. In the 2001/02 season he was with 21 goals together with İlhan Mansız top scorer of the Turkish league.
National team
With the squad of the Turkish national team , he reached third place at the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea . Erdem ended his career in 2005.
Coaching career
From 2006 to November 2011 he worked as an assistant trainer at Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor . On November 17, 2011, he took over the team as head coach and left the club at the end of the season.
