The Real Sociedad de Fútbol ("Royal Football Association"), short Real Sociedad or La Real , in Basque mostly Reala or Erreala , is a Spanish football club from Donostia-San Sebastián . The club plays in white and blue jerseys (Basque txuri-urdin ) and plays its home games in the 39,500-seat Estadio Anoeta stadium .
history
In the early 20th century, returning workers and students from Great Britain brought the sport of football to San Sebastian. In 1904 they founded the sports club San Sebastian Recreation Club and in 1905 they took part in the Spanish cup competition. In May 1905 the football department became an independent part of the club under the name San Sebastian Football Club . Complications when registering for the cup competition in 1909 meant that the team took part in the competition under the name Club Ciclista de San Sebastian . In the final, they beat Español de Madrid 3-1 and could celebrate winning the Copa del Rey .
On September 7, 1909 , the current association was founded as Sociedad de Fútbol . The title Real (royal) was given to the football club on February 11, 1910 by Alfonso XIII. awarded because the summer residence of the Spanish king was then in San Sebastián. After Real Madrid and Betis Sevilla , Real Sociedad was the third club to receive the title.
In 1928 Real Sociedad was one of the founding members of the Spanish Football League (Liga de Fútbol Profesional - "La Liga") . The first season ended in 4th place.
In 1931, after the proclamation of the Second Republic, all parts of the name that were reminiscent of the monarchy had to be removed, and so the club name was changed to Donostia Club de Futbol . After the anti-republican side had triumphed under Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War , the club was renamed Real Sociedad in 1939.
The 1930s were difficult economic and sporting times for the club. In 1935 you had to relegate to the second division for the first time, and by the end of the 1940s, relegations and re-promotions were regularly replaced. Then the club stabilized and was able to reach the cup final in 1951 , which they lost to FC Barcelona .
The club played in the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1974 , but Real Sociedad's most successful period was in the 1980s. In the 1979/80 season , the club lost only one league game and reached 2nd place. In 1980/81 and 1981/82 Real Sociedad won the Spanish championship , in 1982 the Supercopa de España , which was held for the first time, and in 1987 the Copa del Rey for the second time after 1909 .
The 2002/03 season is considered the greatest success in the club's recent history. Their strikers, the Turk Nihat Kahveci (23 goals) and the Serbian Darko Kovačević (20 goals), formed a dangerous duo. In the battle for the championship, Real Sociedad had to admit defeat and was the Spanish runner-up. Real Sociedad were just two points short of overtaking Real Madrid. The club qualified for the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League . There, the team moved into the round of 16, in which the club was eliminated against Olympique Lyon with a 1-0 return leg.
After the departure of their scorers, Real Sociedad played no leading role in the highest Spanish league and found themselves in the relegation battle. So it happened that San Sebastián had to relegate after a 3: 3 in the last game against CF Valencia in the 2006/07 season and for the first time in forty years played second class again . In the 2007/08 season , the promotion could not be made. In July 2008, the club could no longer pay the players' salaries and filed for bankruptcy.
The promotion to the first division (Primera Division) was mastered in 2010 after three years of staying in the second division (Segunda División). Since August 29, 2010 "Erreala" has been playing first class again.
The "Txuri-Urdin" achieved their greatest success since then in the 2012/13 season , when they achieved fourth place in the Primera División on the last day of the game by beating Deportivo La Coruña and thus won the playoffs of the 2013 UEFA Champions League / 14 qualified. Coach Phillipe Montanier returned to his home country at Stade Rennes after the season . San Sebastián was able to qualify for the Champions League, but was eliminated from the bottom of the group against Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donezk.

As with its Basque rival Athletic Bilbao , Real Sociedad only played Basque players for a long time. However, this policy was abandoned in 1989 with the engagement of Irishman John Aldridge , but that did not apply to Spaniards from other regions who were still not allowed to play for the club. But this will no longer practiced for quite some time, and so was the example of Asturias native Boris for a long time part of the squad. In the 2006/07 season, Juanito , Daniel Cifuentes , Gerardo García León , Álvaro Novo and Diego Rivas were five Spaniards who did not come from the Basque Country.

The Real Sociedad women's team was founded in 2004, has played first-class since 2006 and won the Spanish Cup in 2019.

The women's team plays in the highest Spanish hockey league, the Division de Honor Femienina , where they finished the 2006/2007 season with sixth place. In the Spanish Cup, the team reached the semi-finals that season, losing against Atlètic Terrassa 1: 2. The player María López de Eguilaz has been appointed to the squad of the Spanish national team for the 2007 European Women's Field Hockey Championship in Manchester .
