UD Levante - officially Levante Unión Deportiva ( Valencian : Llevant Unió Esportiva ) - is a football club from the Spanish city of Valencia . Levante plays its home games at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia .

history

UD Levante was founded in 1909 as FC Levante, making it the oldest existing football club in Valencia, but has always been in the shadow of the city rivals FC Valencia since its foundation in 1919. In 1939, after the end of the Spanish Civil War , Levante FC, whose stadium on Camino Hondo del Grao had been destroyed, merged with Real Gimnástico CF. The name of the resulting club was Levante Unión Deportiva, in German Levante Sportunion. The red and blue club colors were taken over by Gimnástico CF, the black and white jerseys from FC Levante have served as away clothing ever since.

Originally one played in the simple stadium Campo de Vallejo. In the early 1970s, the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia was built with 25,354 seats and the home was changed.

The club celebrated its greatest success during the civil war , in 1937 the Copa de España Libre (Cup of Free Spain) was held in the part of Spain controlled by republican troops, which UD Levante won 1-0 against their city rivals Valencia CF. However, this cup round was not recognized as official by the Spanish Football Association until September 26, 2007 and was therefore not included in statistics. On September 26, 2007, the Spanish Senate officially awarded the title to Levante UD after 70 years.

In the entire history of the club, the Valencians can look back on nine seasons in the top Spanish division, the Primera División ( 1963/64 , 1964/65 , 2004/05 , 2006/07 , 2007/08 , since 2010/11 ). There has been a clear upswing in recent years. In 2002/2003 they only narrowly failed to get promoted to the first division, the next year they were promoted, but despite consistently good performances, the team only finished the championship in 18th place and was relegated back to the Segunda División , where in the 2005/06 season the direct resurgence succeeded. They stayed in the House of Lords for a year, but in 2007/08 they went to the second highest Spanish league again. The club played in the Segunda División for two years, and in 2010/11 was the last promotion to the top Spanish division.

The three most famous players who played at UD Levante were Johan Cruyff , Carlos Caszely and Predrag Mijatović . Even Vicente Rodríguez and José Enrique played in their youth for Levante. The fans are affectionately referred to as "Granotes" ( val. For "frogs"). The reason is that the former stadium was often flooded by the nearby river when it rained heavily, and the square was then full of small frogs. In the official club logo, as in the city rivals , the heraldic animal of Valencia is depicted, a bat .

On October 8, 2007 coach Abel Resino was dismissed after a botched start to the season and replaced by the Italian Gianni De Biasi . De Biasi resigned on April 16, 2008 and was replaced by José Ángel Moreno . However, he was in office for just under three months before he was replaced by Luis García Plaza after the club was taken over by a group of investors.

Under Juan Ignacio Martínez , who served as head coach since July 1, 2011, the Association of the summit of La Liga managed on 23 October 2011, the initial acquisition of a 3: 0 win at Villarreal .

Deportivo La Coruña vs. Levante UD

At the end of the 2011/12 season Levante was able to secure sixth place in the table and thus qualified for the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 . Thanks to two play-off victories over Scottish representatives FC Motherwell , they made it into the group stage. In a group with Hannover 96 , Helsingborgs IF and FC Twente Enschede , the team reached the second round in second place. There Levante met the Greek representative Olympiacos , who was eliminated with two wins in two legs. The end of the last sixteen was Rubin Kazan's team , who lost 2-0 afterwards in the second leg in Kazan after a 0-0 draw in Levante. At the end of the 2012/13 season , the club separated from Martínez. His successor was Joaquín Caparrós , whose term of office ended on May 27, 2014. Caparrós' successor was José Luis Mendilibar , who, however, had to give way to Lucas Alcaraz in October 2014 . Rubi UD Levante has been training since October 2015 . After six years in the Primera División , Levante was relegated to the Segunda División after the 2015/16 season . For the following season, Juan Muñiz was signed as a coach. In the 2016/17 season he was promoted directly to the Primera División. For the 2017/18 season, the club gave away season tickets to all previous owners who had attended at least 85 percent of the games in the previous season.
