Giovanni "Gianni" De Biasi (born June 16, 1956 in Sarmede ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . He coached the Albanian national football team from 2011 to 2017 and received Albanian citizenship as such. De Biasi has been the coach of the Azerbaijani national football team since 2020 .

Player career

The first years

De Biasi started his career as a professional footballer at Inter Milan as a midfielder . Although he was under contract there for three years, he did not play a single league game for the "Nerazurri". After he remained without a mission in his first season, he was loaned to Serie C club AC Reggiana . There he was able to hint at his talent for the first time. The following year it was awarded again - this time to Serie A club Pescara Calcio . There, too, he managed to get over 20 missions. Since he had no realistic chance of appearances in Inter's team, he was finally sold in 1978.

Brescia Calcio / US Palermo

In the following five years De Biasi played as a regular at Brescia Calcio - but only first class in one season. In 1983 he moved to the Sicilian second division club SSC Palermo , which he turned his back on after three years, as the club was forcibly transferred to the third division due to financial problems.

The last few years

In the 1986/87 season he laced his shoes for Vicenza Calcio before ending his career in the third division with FBC Treviso . At the end he played one more season for the fourth division team Bassano Virtus . At the age of 34, he ended his career as an active player.

Coaching career

First steps in everyday trainer life

De Biasi first coached youth teams in the early 1990s before taking over the fourth division club FC Pro Vasto in 1992 , which was still called Vastese at that time. The next three years (until 1996) he spent as a coach at Serie C club Carpi. In the summer of 1996 he got the opportunity to take over AS Cosenza Calcio in Serie B , but was released there on December 25 of the same year.

The next two seasons he spent at SPAL Ferrara , with whom he achieved promotion from the fourth to the third division.

Modena FC / Brescia Calcio

In the 1999/2000 season, De Biasi failed to get promoted with his new club FC Modena , but then he led his team sensationally in a direct march from the third division to Serie A - after more than 38 years the club was first class again. Modena finished the 2002/03 season there in 13th place.

In the summer of 2003 De Biasi decided to return to his ex-club Brescia Calcio , for which he had played for five years. There he trained Roberto Baggio as an active player in his last season. In the 2004/05 season, the Brescia graduated penultimate and relegated, De Biasi was sacked.

Multiple FC Turin and other stations

After his expulsion in Brescia, he became the second-division club FC Turin , he straight into the Serie A lead. De Biasi actually wanted to train Turin for the following season, but he was released three days before the start of the season and Alberto Zaccheroni was signed . In the second half of the season he was brought back after Zaccheroni's dismissal and saved FC from threatened relegation.

In October 2007 Gianni De Biasi took over from the hapless Spaniard Abel Resino at UD Levante . It was his first international engagement after 30 years in Italian football. There he should make the impossible possible and save the knocked-off bottom of the table from relegation. This was made more difficult as some players, including his Italian compatriots Marco Storari and Bruno Cirillo , terminated their contracts during the winter break as Levante had run into financial difficulties and a few monthly salaries were still outstanding.

In April 2008, De Biasi also gave up his patience, as Levante still had no salaries, and resigned as coach. Then De Biasi returned to his ex-club Turin FC in Italy. With the Turin team he still managed to stay in the league.

In December 2009 De Biasi took over as coach at Udinese Calcio . In February 2010 he was replaced with the Bianconeri by Pasquale Marino .

Deportivo Alavés

In September 2017 it was announced that De Biasi Deportivo Alavés would train.

National coach

On December 14, 2011 it was announced that De Biasi would be the new coach of the Albanian national team and that he had signed a two-year contract. He said in the summer of 2012 that he was disgusted by Serie A games. He wanted to do work for which he was respected and worked longer as a national team coach. Albania is a good starting point for this.

He was granted Albanian citizenship in March 2015 . In October 2015, the Albanian national team he trained qualified for the European Championship 2016 and thus for the first time for a major football tournament. In 2017 he ended his engagement with the Albanian national team. In July 2020, De Biasi was introduced as the new national coach of the Azerbaijani national football team.
