The association was founded in 1921. Initially called "Sport Friends", the name was changed to Club Deportivo Alavés on January 21, 1921.

In total, the club has spent fourteen seasons in the Primera División so far .
In the mid-1980s, the club was facing bankruptcy, which the team was able to avert with the help of Athletic Bilbao and the sale of the future national goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta .
The club's most successful period was from 1998 to 2003, when the club was top notch for five years in a row and in 2001 achieved the greatest success in the club's history when it made it to the UEFA Cup final . In this final in the Westfalenstadion, the team lost 4-5 after a golden goal against Liverpool .
El Glorioso ("the glorious") had to go into the second division after the 2002/03 season. For the 2005/06 season , the club was able to rise again to the Primera División, but finished 18th in the table at the end of the season and immediately rose again. In the following two years, the fall into the third class could initially be prevented. At the end of the 2008/09 season but the club had to transition into the Segunda División B compete. In the 2012/13 season, Alavés managed to return to the second division four years after relegation.
At the end of the 2015/16 season , he was promoted to the Primera División after ten years.
