John Alberto Guidetti or John Guidetti for short (born April 15, 1992 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish football player . The striker has been under contract with Hannover 96 as a loan player from Deportivo Alavés in Germany since January 2020 . Due to his style of play, especially due to his physical presence on the field, he was nicknamed "The Swedish Wayne Rooney " by the English media .

Career

Young players in Sweden, Kenya and England

Guidetti grew up as the son of a development worker in Sweden and Kenya. He first moved to Africa with his family at the age of three when his father was running a school project in the slums of Nairobi . In 1998 she returned to Sweden, where the son - enthusiastic about football from the 1998 World Cup tournament watched on television - joined the youth team at the Stockholm club IF Brommapojkarna . He played at the club, which is mainly known for its youth work, until 2002, before he went back to Kenya with his family at the age of ten. There the father initiated an offshoot of the IF Brommapojkarna with the Impala Bromma Boys , for which the son subsequently played. A year later he joined the Mathare Youth Sports Association , which was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize , and was also a member of the Ligi Ndogo youth academy located a short distance from the Swedish school . After training there under the eyes of his father, the two often drove to Kibera to play football with other boys.

After returning to Sweden, Guidetti joined IF Brommapojkarna again. He was soon appointed by the people in charge of Svenska Fotbollförbundet as one of the country's greatest offensive talents in the junior national teams . In 2007 he made his debut in the Swedish U15 national team at international level. At his club, he moved up to the squad of the relegated competition team from the Allsvenskan in 2008 and made two short appearances in the second division season in 2008 in the Superettan , at the end of the season he was promoted to the top division after winning relegation games against Ljungskile SK celebrate the country.

The strong season of the mostly talented team did not go unregistered and attracted various scouts from international clubs over the course of the season. After the promotion, the club then had to let go of its two greatest talents with Albin Ekdal , who moved to Juventus Turin in Italy , and Guidetti, who was brought to Manchester City by his compatriot Sven-Göran Eriksson .

At City he was incorporated into the Academy and initially ran for the U18 of the club. After 13 goals in just as many appearances for the Academy and winning the Al-Ain Trophy in February 2010, he was able to draw attention for the first time in several games for the City Reserve. The winning goal in the 3-2 test match against Bury was followed by a flawless hat-trick on March 1, 2010 in the 4-1 Reserve League against Burnley FC .

Guidetti also succeeded on an international level: After scoring four times in seven appearances for the Swedish U16 between 2007 and 2008 , he moved up into the U17 selection early in 2008 . On October 9th, 2009 he scored all four goals of his team in the 4: 4 against the newly crowned U17 runner-up European champions Netherlands, three of them within the first half of the game. In total, he scored eight goals in eleven games for the U17 national team.

Years of traveling as a loan player

Despite his good performance in the youth field and the reserve team, Guidetti did not move up to the competition team. On April 15, 2010, the club loaned him to his youth club IF Brommapojkarna. There he was one of the regular players in the early stages of the 2010 season . Together with strike partner Pablo Piñones-Arce , he formed a congenial offensive duo, which played a major role in the team's brief soaring. Guidetti was used in all eight possible games, in which he scored three goals and prepared as many. As a result, he was nominated for the first time in May for the Swedish U21 national team , but he made his debut in early June in a 1-0 win in the European Championship qualification against Israel.

As a result, BP tried to borrow the player beyond June, but City coach Roberto Mancini refused on the grounds that he wanted to give him a chance in the professional squad for the new season. Without Guidetti, BP slipped back to the bottom of the table and finally relegated to the Superettan at the end of the season.

As a result, he was during the preparation for the 2010/11 season in the squad of the professional team and made his debut on July 23, 2010 during the 2-0 defeat in the friendly against Sporting Lisbon in the competition team. In September he made his competitive debut in the first team in the League Cup , before he was awarded again at the end of November and was handed over to Burnley FC in the second-rate Football League Championship by the end of the year . Here he scored his first professional goal in English football on Boxing Day in a 2-1 away win. It remained his only goal in five games for the Clarets as the loan deal was not renewed and he returned to Manchester City in January.

In the summer of 2011 there was a controversy with Twente Enschede about the expiring training contract at Manchester City , who supposedly had already reached an agreement with Guidetti on a contract and thus committed him free of charge. The interest group Federatie Betaald Voetbal Organization had an expert opinion drawn up after the contract negotiated with Guidetti's father was legally valid. Ultimately, however, Guidetti stayed with Manchester City but was loaned out again before the 2011/12 season, this time to Feyenoord in the Netherlands. He scored his first goal in the Eredivisie when he made his debut on matchday five of the 2011/12 season when he added the last goal in the 3-1 away win at NAC Breda . As a result, he was a regular goalscorer and recommended himself for the Swedish national team , to which he was appointed for the first time in spring 2012. On February 29, 2012, national coach Erik Hamrén replaced him in Sweden's 3-1 win over Croatia in the second half when the score was 1-1, while Sebastian Larsson led the Northern Europeans to an away win with a brace. By the end of April he had scored 20 times in 23 games, scoring three goals in three games. He then had to take a break due to a virus infection that affected his central nervous system. As a result, Guidetti developed sensory disturbances in his right leg, which initially forced him to undertake a rehabilitation measure lasting several months and thus prevented a possible participation in the 2012 European Championship finals .

In mid-March 2013, Guidetti returned to the football field and ran for the Manchester City U21 team. In seven games for Manchester's reserve team, he scored six goals. However, at the end of April he was injured again. A knee operation then put him out of action for a long time again, after almost six months of play, he came back for the first time in early November 2013 in the U21 game against Norwich City . He quickly returned to the Swedish U21 national team, in which he was a regular under coach Håkan Ericson - and in his first game after his return, two goals for a 5-0 win against the Maltese U21 national team in the U21 qualification -EM finals in 2015 .

In order to collect match practice, Guidetti moved to league rivals Stoke City on January 13, 2014 on loan until the end of the season . Here he did not get under coach Mark Hughes beyond the status of a supplementary player and played his six league appearances in the top English division all as a substitute.

In early September 2014 Guidetti was loaned to Celtic Glasgow in the Scottish Premiership until the end of the 2014/15 season. The necessary transfer documents were only submitted after the transfer deadlines had expired , but the change was made by FIFA following a request from the Scottish club. Nevertheless, Celtic decided not to include Guidetti in the 25-player squad registered with UEFA for the group stage of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League . For the team Guidetti made his debut on the 6th game day of the Premiership against FC Aberdeen when he was substituted on for long-time captain Scott Brown . After three weeks, the striker scored in a 3-0 win in the third round of the Scottish League Cup against Heart of Midlothian for the first time in the Bhoys shirt. Three days later, the Swede scored two goals in a 2-1 win against FC St. Mirren in the Premiership. By the end of the 2014/15 season , he had scored eight goals in the Premiership and, alongside Leigh Griffiths , Kris Commons , Craig Gordon and Stefan Johansen, was the fourth-best club scorer to win the championship. In the cup competition he failed with the team in the semifinals at the eventual winner Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a 2: 3 defeat after extra time, while he had achieved the interim 2: 2 equalization. At the same time, he stayed on the road to success with the Swedish junior national team when, before the last two match days of the qualification, Greece , Turkey and Poland were playing for group victory alongside Sweden . A few days after a 3-0 win over Greece, the team won 4: 3 against the Turks with the same number of points to date - Oscar Hiljemark scored the winning goal in stoppage time - and benefited from the simultaneous defeat of the Polish team in Greece, so they still did was displaced by one point from first place in the table. In the subsequent play-off games against France , the Western Europeans already had one leg in the finals after a 2-0 first leg success, especially in the second leg after the Swedes 3-0 lead by the doubly successful Isaac Kiese Thelin and a goal by Oscar Lewicki layvin kurzawa in 87 minutes for the away goals major gateway to 3: 1 achieved. Shortly thereafter, Lewicki shot the team around Guidetti, Abdul Khalili , Joseph Baffo and team captain Alexander Milošević to the European Championship finals in the Czech Republic. Guidetti's good form in autumn was also reflected in the fact that he was named Player of the Month in the Scottish Championship in October 2014 and returned to the senior team in November when they scored 0 with a goal from Raphaël Varane in the closing stages: 1 defeat of the French senior team .

U21 European champions, World Cup 2018 and clubs in Spain and Germany

After the loan deal with Celtic ended, Guidetti was initially without a club from summer 2015, as his contract with Manchester City had also expired. First, however, he took part in the U21 European Championship finals in June of that year. In the 2-1 opening win against Italy , he scored the Scandinavians' first tournament goal with the goal of the 1-1 draw. After a 0-1 defeat against England by a goal from Jesse Lingard , the team qualified for the semi-finals with a 1-1 draw in the final group game against Portugal's youngsters . Thanks to Simon Tibbling's goal shortly before the final whistle, the team were level on points the Italians, but if the goal difference was worse , the direct comparison decided in favor of the Swedes. In the 4-1 victory over the Danish U21 national team , Guidetti opened the scoring with his second tournament goal with a penalty kick . Also in the final, in which Portugal faced again as an opponent, he was the first to successfully get the ball into the net, when the penalty shoot-out was due after 120 minutes of goalless play . There, goalkeeper Patrik Carlgren became the match winner when he parried the penalties of Ricardo Esgaio and William Carvalho and led Sweden to their first title win.

A few days after the final, Guidetti signed a five-year contract with Celta Vigo and moved to the Spanish Primera División . In the 2015/16 season he was a regular for much of the season and contributed seven goals in 35 games to qualifying for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , finishing sixth in the table. He had also established himself in the Swedish national team and was included by Hamrén in Sweden's squad for the 2016 European Championship in France. In the opening game against Ireland he came into the game in the last third with a score of 0: 1, against Italy he was then on the starting line-up. In the decisive game against Belgium he was a substitute again, but could not prevent the defeat and thus the preliminary round.

In the following season, Guidetti was used less often in the championship, the team missed the return to international business as thirteenth in the table. But it was all the more successful in the cup competitions: in the European Cup, the team was only eliminated in the semi-finals after a 0-1 home defeat and a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against the eventual winners Manchester United , in the Copa del Rey 2016 / 17 they beat Real Madrid in the quarterfinals before Deportivo Alavés prevailed in the semifinals . After Guidetti only made eight appearances as a substitute for Celta Vigo in the first half of the 2017/18 season , he was loaned out to league rivals Deportivo Alavés for six months in January 2018. There he was a regular player until the end of the season, he scored three goals in 17 league games and was finally committed after the loan contract expired.

In the summer of 2018, Guidetti was part of the Swedish squad for the World Cup in Russia under national coach Janne Andersson . It was used once in the group stage and in the quarter-finals that were lost to England .

In mid-January 2020, the Spaniards awarded the Swedes until the end of season 2019/20 in the German 2. Bundesliga at Hannover 96 . There is a purchase option after the loan transaction.

Private

Guidetti's paternal grandfather is Italian . He spent a period of his youth in Kenya , where his father was working on a school project in Nairobi . In retrospect, Guidetti describes playing football with mostly older children in the slums of Nairobi as an important aspect of his development, both as a footballer and as a person. He is the founder of the John Guidetti Foundation, which works for poor children in Africa .
