On August 31, 2004, Rooney signed a contract with Manchester United . That transfer cost the club £ 31 million. This made the transfer the second most expensive in the history of England at the time after the transfer of Rio Ferdinand from Leeds United to Manchester United.

Rooney made his debut for Manchester on September 28, 2004 in the UEFA Champions League against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In that game, he scored a hat trick (United won 6-2). At first Rooney played more sideways than in the middle, which coach Sir Alex Ferguson corrected due to increasing criticism from experts and fans regarding the bad form of the team. Next to Ruud van Nistelrooy , the Englishman came second. He won his first title in 2006 when the team won the League Cup against Wigan Athletic . Rooney was voted "Man of the Match" in the final.

On October 17, 2006, he was the first captain of the Champions League against FC Copenhagen . This made him the youngest captain in the club's history at the time. In November 2006 he extended his contract for two years. Surprisingly, Rooney signed a contract in October 2010 that tied him to the club until 2015, although he wanted to leave the club two days earlier due to the allegedly poor future prospects. The weekly salary on the new contract was £ 180,000. On September 17, 2013, Rooney scored his 200th goal for United in the Champions League group game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , which had previously only been achieved by Bobby Charlton , Denis Law and Jack Rowley . In February 2014, Rooney signed a new contract through the summer of 2019. Over the next five years Rooney would have made about £ 85 million (about £ 300,000 per week). On January 21, 2017, Rooney scored his 250th goal for Manchester United in a draw with Stoke City .

In the 2006/07 season , Rooney initially had problems when he failed to score in the first ten competitive games. It was only in the eleventh game against the Bolton Wanderers that he managed a hat trick. There was speculation about his lack of fitness and lack of self-confidence . Although he had problems initially, he scored 23 goals in competitive games, United were also champions.

After two metatarsal fractures (2004 and 2006), he was seriously injured for the third time in the 2006/07 season and suffered from a hairline crack in his foot. Rooney made his comeback at the end of September 2007. He took over the vacant number 10 from former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and won the Champions League this season in addition to the championship with Manchester United .

In the 2011/12 season , Rooney broke nine-year-old Jamie Thomas's hand while warming up in Manchester's 5-0 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers when he accidentally shot the ball into the fan block.

During a visit to West Ham United in March 2014, Rooney scored with a volley from 45 meters in the 8th minute to make it 1-0, later he scored the 2-0 final score. With his 211th goal for United, Rooney closed the all-time scorer list to third-placed Jack Rowley. For the 2014/15 season Wayne Rooney new captain of Manchester United was.

Return to Everton FC

After 13 years Rooney left Manchester United for his youth club Everton FC. He signed a two-year contract with the Toffees . In his second appearance in the 2017/18 season, he scored his 200th goal in the Premier League against Manchester City . Only record goal scorer Alan Shearer managed this before him.

In addition, Berti Vogts tried to win Rooney for his team as the then coach of the Scottish national team in 2002, as a grandmother came from Scotland . In a conversation with Vogts, however, Rooney emphasized that he only wanted to play for England.

Rooney made his debut on February 12, 2003 against Australia , becoming the youngest player to ever play for England's national team. This record lasted until Theo Walcott played in May 2006. On June 17, 2004, he became the youngest player to ever score a goal at a European Championship. This record was broken four days later by the Swiss Johan Vonlanthen . In the quarter-final match against Portugal (June 24, 2004) Rooney injured his metatarsal bone . England were eliminated on penalties. Rooney was elected to the official Euro 2004 All-Star team and was the English team's top scorer.

Rooney caused a sensation when he broke his metatarsal again on April 29, 2006, shortly before the 2006 World Cup in Germany . Thanks to an oxygen tent , which David Beckham quickly made fit again after a broken foot, he could already be substituted on in the second group game against Trinidad and Tobago (June 15) and played in the last group game against Sweden (June 20) from the beginning on. In the quarter-final against Portugal, he was sent off for a foul against Ricardo Carvalho and was suspended and fined around € 3,500.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa also ended prematurely for Rooney and the English national team with a 4-1 loss to Germany in the round of 16. Rooney did not score during the tournament and fell short of his possibilities.

After Rooney was sent off in the final match in qualifying for the 2012 European Championship , UEFA banned him for the entire group stage of the tournament. However, after a successful appeal, the suspension was reduced to the first two games against France and Sweden.

On June 19, 2014, Rooney scored his first goal in the second group game against Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup with the interim equalization to 1-1 in the tenth game at a World Cup finals. At this tournament, England had to give up in the preliminary round after two defeats and a draw.

On June 27, he converted a penalty in the fourth minute of the round of 16 of the 2016 European Football Championship against Iceland. It remained his only goal at the tournament as Iceland won the game 2-1. On August 23, 2017, Rooney announced his retirement from the national team. He played his last international match for the time being in November 2016, when he led the national team as captain to a 3-0 win against Scotland in the 2018 World Cup qualifying .
