Athletic career

Day already attracted attention as a schoolboy and was appointed to the English student selection team several times. West Ham United signed him in 1971, where he signed a professional contract in 1973. Under coach Ron Greenwood , he quickly established himself as a regular in the First Division and displaced the previous number 1 Robert Ferguson on the bench. After the club had held the class with only one point ahead of the relegation places, John Lyall took over as the fifth coach in the club's history since 1902 in the summer of 1974 as coach. Under his direction, Day reached the FA Cup final in 1974/75 alongside Frank Lampard senior , Trevor Brooking , Tommy Taylor , Pat Holland and Billy Bonds . With two goals from Alan Taylor , Fulham FC were defeated 2-0. At the end of the season Day was named England's Young Player of the Year (the only goalkeeper until 2020). While the club was also in the championship in the relegation battle in the 1975/76 season, he reached the final of the 1975/76 European Cup Winners' Cup . Despite the 1-0 lead through Holland, Days' team lost the final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels against the Belgian representative RSC Anderlecht 2: 4. In 1978 Day rose with the club in the Second Division ; after the missed direct resurgence, he left the club in 1979.

Day hired in the summer of 1979 with the second division Leyton Orient and in 1982 rose with the club in the third division . After the missed promotion, he moved to Aston Villa in the first division in the summer of 1983 . There he put Nigel Spink under pressure and was able - but only temporarily - to displace him between the posts. Then the second division Leeds United took him in 1985 under contract. Under coach Howard Wilkinson he was the regular goalkeeper when the club rose again to the First Division in the summer of 1990. While the team immediately established itself in the top group, he moved behind the newly signed John Lukic in the second line and was in the 1991/92 season , when the club became English champions, temporarily awarded to first division rivals Luton Town and Sheffield United . In 1993 he left the club in the direction of third division Carlisle United , where he later ended his career.

After initial coaching experience as a manager at Carlisle United, Day later worked as a coach on Alan Curbishley's team at Charlton Athletic and West Ham United. This was followed by engagements in scouting and youth work at Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion .
