He grew up in simple circumstances with his brother and two sisters. His father worked as a municipal gardener and kit manager for the regional league club CF Andorinha. Career

In the club

The first steps

Cristiano Ronaldo started playing football at the age of three. At the age of eight he joined the amateur club CF Andorinha, where his father worked as a kit man . In 1995, Nacional Funchal and Marítimo Funchal, the two leading clubs on Madeira, were interested in signing the young talent. The choice finally fell on the smaller club of Nacional after representatives of Marítimo canceled a meeting with Ronaldo's advisor at Andorinha. In 1997, at the age of twelve, he completed a three-day trial training session at Sporting Lisbon and then moved to the capital city club.

Sporting Lisbon

From then on, Ronaldo trained in Alcochete with other youth players from the club under professional guidance at the Sporting Lisbon squad . Initially he had acceptance problems with his comrades, who mostly came from the vicinity of Lisbon and made fun of Ronaldo's specific dialect from Madeira. An extreme growth spurt and a cardiac arrhythmia , which put the continuation of his career in question and required an operation, initially stood in the way of his further athletic development. Nevertheless, Ronaldo was later the first youngster from Sporting Lisbon to play for the U16, U17, U18, reserve teams and the professional team within one season. He made his debut on September 29, 2002 against Sporting Braga and scored two goals for a 3-0 win in the second game for the A-team on October 7, 2002 against Moreirense FC . In addition, Ronaldo was in the Portuguese squad for the U17 European Championship in Denmark in 2002 .

Through his performance at the U17 European Championship, he was also noticed by the international football world. In England, Gérard Houllier from Liverpool FC and Arsène Wenger from Arsenal FC vied for the Portuguese's favor. Talks were also held with Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona during the 2002/03 season . In the summer of 2003 there was an encounter with Alex Ferguson and his club Manchester United , when Sporting defeated the English club 3-1 on the occasion of the opening celebrations of the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon. Ronaldo demonstrated his capabilities in both outer positions and impressed his opponents with a tricky game to such an extent that they spoke to their coach about a possible transfer of the young Portuguese.

Manchester United

2003–2006: development and breakthrough

In August 2003, Ronaldo moved to Manchester United for 17.5 million euros to succeed David Beckham in the right midfield position. He was the first Portuguese to join Manchester United and upon arrival received the prestigious number 7 shirt previously worn by club legends such as George Best , Bryan Robson , Éric Cantona and Beckham. To avoid this pressure, he originally chose the same jersey number as Sporting with the 28. However, Ferguson insisted that his new player should play with the historic number 7 in the future.

Cristiano Ronaldo (April 2006)

On August 16, 2003, the first day of the 2003/04 season , Ronaldo made his debut at Old Trafford . Substituted after an hour at 1-0 against Bolton Wanderers , he quickly won over the fans with his tricky wing play and made a decisive contribution to the 4-0 final result. Ronaldo scored his first goal in the Premier League in early November with a free kick against Portsmouth FC . In total, he played 40 competitive games during his first season in England and scored six goals. Despite his successful debut, he initially had difficulty getting used to the English style of playing. The first title was not long in coming: After the Red Devils had only finished third in the championship, they triumphed in the FA Cup at the end of the season . In the final against Millwall FC , Ronaldo headed for the lead. He was voted “ Player of the Season ” by United fans at the end of the season .

The 2004/05 season , in which Ronaldo played 50 competitive games and scored nine goals, ended without a title win. In the league it was enough for Manchester United again only to third place. In the final of the FA Cup, Ronaldo scored on penalties against Arsenal, but the game was lost.

In the 2005/06 season , Ronaldo finally developed into an important top performer of his team, which this time was eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League, but was supplemented by promising new signings with Wayne Rooney , Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidić and then in the league reached second place. A title win succeeded by the 4-0 victory in the final of the League Cup against Wigan Athletic , in the course of which Ronaldo also met. At the beginning of the season he had scored the club's 1,000th Premier League goal. At the end of the season, Ronaldo was in the double-digit range for the first time with twelve goals. A first notable honor was then the award for the best young professional of the FIFPro , which he was to successfully defend the following year. In the vote for FIFA World Player of the Year in 2005 , he finished 20th Place.

2006–2009: Three championship titles, first Champions League triumph and world footballer
Cristiano Ronaldo (December 2006)

Although after the 2006 World Cup, as a result of the events in the game against England, many rumors of change emerged and he was whistled by opposing fans every time he touched the ball in the first few games after the tournament, the 2006/07 season marked Ronaldo's final breakthrough as Manchester United's star player and one of the best players in the Premier League. Ronaldo's footballing style within the team matured and his egocentric style of play gave way more and more to a good passing game. In addition, Ronaldo became more and more dangerous as the season progressed. The highlight of this were three league encounters in the last week of December, in which he met twice. As in November, he was then voted Player of the Month . On the penultimate matchday, Ronaldo scored decisive for the win against Manchester City , which he won for the first time and Manchester United again in four years. In the Champions League , the Red Devils pushed through to the semi-finals after the disappointment last year. The highlight of the European Cup season was the quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford against AS Roma , which United - thanks in part to two goals from Ronaldo - won 7-1. After the season, Ronaldo - the top scorer in the league with 17 goals and 13 assists - was voted England's Footballer of the Year in four categories . In April 2007 he signed a new five-year contract, despite increased rumors of transfer, which made him the highest-paid player at Manchester United at the time.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Ronaldo met his former club Sporting Lisbon in the group stage of the Champions League, scored the winning goal in both meetings and received a standing ovation from his former supporter in Lisbon for his demonstrative refusal to cheer. Both in the European club competition and in the Premier League, Ronaldo continuously attracted attention with his scoring qualities. In December, he finished second and third in the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year elections . On January 12, 2008 he shot against Newcastle United, the first hat trick of his professional career. A week later he equalized his total number of goals from the previous season in a 2-0 win against Reading FC with his 23rd league goal. With twelve goals in the last twelve games of the season - including an important goal on the decisive final day of the game against Wigan Athletic - Ronaldo had great merit in Manchester United's successful defending of the English championship title in May. In the Champions League , Ronaldo and his club reached the final for the first time after victories in the knockout phase against Olympique Lyon , AS Roma and FC Barcelona. Here he hit a head against Chelsea for the lead. Although he missed in the subsequent penalty shootout, he won the most important title in European club football for the first time with Manchester United in the end. Ronaldo was then voted England's Footballer of the Year by journalists, fellow players and fans. In addition, with 31 goals in the Premier League, he secured the title of top scorer and the Golden Shoe as Europe's top scorer. With eight goals also top scorer of the Champions League, Ronaldo was also named the best player of the season by UEFA . Across all competitions he had scored 42 goals in 49 games and thus almost set the club record set by Denis Law from the 1963/64 season (46 competitive goals).

Cristiano Ronaldo (March 2009)

Since he had decided to have surgery after the European Championship due to persistent pain in his right ankle , Ronaldo was condemned to watch at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . In mid-September he was able to intervene in the game again. In November he led Manchester United to a 5-0 win with two free-kick goals against Stoke City , scoring his 100th competitive goal for the English club. In December he won the Ballon d'Or 2008 and with his team the FIFA Club World Cup . The coronation followed on January 12, 2009 in Zurich, when Ronaldo was named World Player of the Year by FIFA . In March Ronaldo won the final of the English League Cup against Tottenham Hotspur with Manchester United and scored in the game- winning penalty shoot-out. In early April he scored his 20th brace in the Premier League in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa with goals 14 and 15 of the season. In the quarter-finals of the Champions League , he shot his team against FC Porto with a goal from over 35 meters, for which he was awarded the Puskás Prize by FIFA at the end of the year . Also in the semi-final against Arsenal, Ronaldo, with two goals and one assist, helped Manchester United reach the final of the competition as in the previous year. However, this was lost 2-0 to FC Barcelona. In the league, Ronaldo and his team won the third English championship in a row at the end of the season. Viewed over the entire season, Ronaldo was rarely able to match the performance of the previous season. He scored a total of 26 competitive goals, including 18 in the Premier League. Frenchman Nicolas Anelka (19) took the title of top scorer from him after he was spared by Alex Ferguson due to the upcoming Champions League final on the last day of the game. After the final, Ronaldo did not rule out a much-discussed move to Real Madrid in the summer.

real Madrid

2009–2013: Record changes, scoring records and first titles under Mourinho

On June 11, 2009, Manchester United announced that they had accepted an offer from Real Madrid for Ronaldo for £ 80m (€ 94m). This transfer fee clearly exceeded the previously applicable record proceeds for Zinédine Zidane and caused considerable discussions at the time. On June 25, Real Madrid announced the signing of the transfer deal with Manchester United. Ronaldo signed a six-year contract until June 30, 2015 and was officially presented on July 6 in front of over 80,000 spectators at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium . This exceeded the previous record of almost 75,000 fans who had visited the SSC Napoli stadium in 1984 on the occasion of the presentation of Diego Maradona . During the event, it was revealed that Ronaldo would wear the number 9 jersey for the 2009/10 season , as his favorite number 7 was reserved for club legend Rául .

Cristiano Ronaldo (January 2010)

Ronaldo had a record start at the Madrilenians: As the club's first newcomer, he scored at least one goal in each of the first four league games. In the Champions League , he scored a brace in each of the first two matches for his new club. In October, he went on an international tour in a state of weakness and injured his right ankle, after which he had to take a month and a half off. Without Ronaldo, Real Madrid, which had been victorious in all games until then, only won one of the following five games and lost the championship lead. After the injury break, Ronaldo continuously topped up his goals account, but could not prevent Real Madrid from dropping out of two important season competitions early on: In the Spanish Cup, the club embarrassed themselves without Ronaldo in the round of 32 against a third division team, and in the As in the previous five years, Real Madrid failed in the Champions League in the round of 16, although Ronaldo scored an early goal after losing 1-0 in the first leg to Olympique Lyon in the second leg. With seven goals in six games, he left the international competition as the most effective goalscorer. On May 5, 2010 he shot his first hat trick in the Primera División against RCD Mallorca . Real Madrid collected 96 points in the Spanish league, but lost to FC Barcelona in the battle for the championship despite this club record. This ended Ronaldo's first season in Madrid, despite 33 goals in 35 competitive games without a title win.

Cristiano Ronaldo (2011)

In the 2010/11 season Ronaldo was wearing jersey number 7 again under coach José Mourinho as a result of Rául's move to FC Schalke 04 . Against Racing Santander he scored four goals in one game for the first time in his career on October 23, 2010. At the end of the first half of the season he was the top scorer in the Primera División with 22 goals in 19 games . In addition, he broke another club record by cracking the 50-goal mark after 51 league games and leaving club legends like Ferenc Puskás (54 games), Alfredo Di Stéfano (56) and Pahiño (57) behind. In April 2011, Ronaldo won with the Royal the first title: the final of the Copa del Rey FC Barcelona was defeated; Ronaldo headed the 1-0 winning goal in extra time. However, Real Madrid lost to the Catalans in the semi-finals of the Champions League and the championship. Ronaldo achieved personal success when he broke the Primera División's goal record (38 goals this season) with two free-kick goals against Villarreal in mid-May , which was set by Zarra in 1950/51 and leveled by Hugo Sánchez in 1989/90 . With nine goals in three consecutive league games, he set another club record and the league record. During the second half of the season, Ronaldo scored a total of eighteen other league goals, eleven of them in the last four games. With a total of 41 goals in 34 league games, he won the Pichichi trophy and was the first player in the 80-year history of the Primera División to reach the 40-goal mark. In addition, he was awarded the Golden Shoe as Europe's top scorer for the second time . No other player had previously won it in two different leagues. With a total of 53 goals in 54 competitive games, Ronaldo also exceeded the 51-year-old club record set by Ferenc Puskás, who once scored 47 goals in one season. At the end of the season, he had 86 goals after 89 competitive games for Real Madrid, 66 of them in 63 league games. After only two seasons in Madrid, he secured a place in the top 20 most successful goal scorers in the club's history.

The 2011-12 season opened Ronaldo in August with a hat-trick against Real Zaragoza . With 14 goals in five games across the seasons, he set another league record. In early November, he scored his 100th goal in the 105th competitive game for Real Madrid in the group stage of the Champions League against Olympique Lyon . On March 24, 2012, Ronaldo scored his 100th goal in the Primera División against Real Sociedad in the 92nd game, breaking the club record of Ferenc Puskás, who had needed 105 games for the same number of hits. In the history of the Spanish league, only Isidro Lángara was faster in this regard (82 games). With a total of 46 goals this season in the Primera División, Ronaldo was the first player to score over 40 goals in two consecutive La Liga seasons. He was also the first player in the Primera División to score at least one goal within a season against every team in the Spanish league. He proved to be the “undisputed leader” of his team throughout the season, was the only player in the squad to play in all league games and led the club to the Spanish championship for the first time in three years with a new point and scoring record. With his goals and assists, he was involved in a total of 58 goals and, as in the two previous years, was primarily responsible for Real Madrid's best offensive in the league. With another ten goals in the Champions League, from which Real Madrid were eliminated in the semi-finals against FC Bayern Munich , as well as four goals in the Spanish Cup and Supercup, Ronaldo scored a total of 60 goals in 55 competitive games. In doing so, he improved his own club record from the previous year. In his first three years at Real Madrid, he scored 146 goals in 144 competitive games, including 112 goals in 101 league games.

Cristiano Ronaldo surrounded by RCD Espanyol Barcelona players (December 2012)

At the start of the 2012/13 season won Ronaldo with Real Madrid Supercopa de España against Barcelona, scoring in home and away each goal. By also contributing two goals to the 2-2 draw in the league round at Camp Nou , he set a new record with goals in six consecutive Clásicos . While many of his teammates could not build on the performance of the previous season and as a result Real Madrid lost connection to the top of the table early on, Ronaldo maintained his hit rate and took on more responsibility. With 34 goals in 34 league games, he scored the first player of the Royal in three league seasons more than 30 goals. On May 8, 2013, Ronaldo scored his 200th competitive goal for Real Madrid. He was the sixth player of the club to reach this mark and with 197 competitive games faster than the club's record holder Ferenc Puskás (202 competitive games). In the Champions League , Ronaldo scored twelve goals, a career record at the time, with which he improved Raúl's club record (10 goals) and became the competition's top scorer for the second time. In the round of 16, Ronaldo played for the first time since the record change in summer 2009 against his ex-club Manchester United, scoring 1-1 in the first leg and 2-1 win in the second leg at Old Trafford. Out of gratitude to the club and its supporters, who received him with an ovation in Manchester, he demonstratively refrained from making a cheering gesture at both goals. With Real Madrid he was eliminated for the third time in a row in the semifinals of the competition. In the Copa del Rey , Ronaldo contributed to the final of the Madrilenians: In the round of 16 he scored a total of four goals against Celta Vigo , in the semi-final second leg against FC Barcelona a brace to win 3-1 at Camp Nou. This was the sixth away Clásico in a row in which Ronaldo entered the scorer list. In the final against Atlético Madrid , Ronaldo gave his team the lead. However, the game was lost 2-1 in extra time and Ronaldo was expelled from the field shortly before the end of the game for assault. He finished every season competition with an average of one goal per game. He scored a total of 55 competitive goals and increased his hit count at Real Madrid to 201 goals in 199 games.

In April Ronaldo won the Spanish Cup for the second time with Real Madrid by beating FC Barcelona in the final , but missed it due to an injury. With 29 league games, he played as few appearances as he did in the 2009/10 season and clearly lost the duel for the Pichichi trophy with 25 goals against Messi (37). For his achievements in the 2017 calendar year, he was named World Footballer of the Year for the fifth time. On March 3, 2018, he reached the 300-goal mark in the 286th league game as the second player in the Primera División after Lionel Messi and needed 48 fewer games than the Argentine. In the league , the Madrilenians lost contact with FC Barcelona in the first half of the season. As in the previous year, Ronaldo was regularly rotated from the squad by Zidane against teams in the lower third of the table. He scored a total of 26 league goals in 27 games. In the first and second legs of the eighth and quarter-finals of the Champions League, Ronaldo scored against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin and improved Ruud van Nistelrooy's (9) record from the 2002/03 season with goals in eleven consecutive games . In the course of this record series, Ronaldo scored his 100th goal against Paris in the 95th Champions League appearance for Real Madrid. After beating Liverpool 3-1 in the final , he won the Champions League with Real Madrid for the third time in a row and for the fourth time in five years. With 15 goals in 13 games, he was the top scorer of the competition for the sixth time in a row and a total of seventh times. With a season average of one goal per game and a total of 44 goals, Ronaldo was at the end of the season with 450 goals in 438 competitive games for Real Madrid. With the fifth Champions League win of his career, he became the record holder of the competition since it was renamed in 1992. Immediately after winning the final, he sparked speculation about a club change in an interview by explaining his time at Real Madrid was very beautiful.

Juventus Turin

For the 2018/19 season, Ronaldo moved to the Italian Serie A at Juventus Turin at the age of 33 . He signed a contract running until June 30, 2022 and cost 100 million euros transfer fee plus “additional costs” of twelve million euros and training allowances to his youth clubs. The transfer fee was the seventh highest to date and the highest for a player over the age of 30 and the highest ever paid by an Italian club. In an official suicide note, Ronaldo said it was time to start a new chapter in life, which is why he asked Real Madrid to agree to the transfer. He later added that he no longer felt he was indispensable for the club, and especially for club president Florentino Pérez .

While Real Madrid recorded a significantly lower number of spectators at the beginning of the season, in the meantime remained without scoring for more than eight hours in a row, ultimately scored as few goals as the last time before Ronaldo was signed and already lost all title chances three months before the end of the season, Ronaldo scored ten goals in the first 14 league games and thus more than any other newcomer to Juventus since John Charles in the 1957/58 season . In mid-September he was the fifth footballer after Josef Bican , Ferenc Puskás , Jimmy McGrory and Uwe Seeler to achieve 400 first division goals in Europe and at the end of November he was the first player to win 100 Champions League victories. In January 2019, he scored the 1-0 winning goal against AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana match and celebrated his first title win with Juventus. In the knockout phase of the Champions League , Ronaldo scored all five goals of his team, including a hat-trick to the 3-0 win in the second leg of the second leg against Atlético Madrid , which secured Juventus despite a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, as well as each a header goal in the two quarter-finals against Ajax Amsterdam , which were lost with an aggregate result of 2-3. On April 20, 2019, he won the Italian championship prematurely with Juventus five game days before the end of the season. With 21 goals in 31 league games, he was named Most Valuable Player of Serie A and Italy's Footballer of the Year . Ronaldo was the first footballer to win championship titles in England, Spain and Italy and to date is the only player to be named Footballer of the Year in these three countries.

For the 2019/20 season Juventus replaced coach Massimiliano Allegri with Maurizio Sarri . Ronaldo finally got used to the style of play in the Italian league and set a new club record and the league record in February 2020 with goals in eleven consecutive Serie A appearances. Games were suspended from the beginning of March to mid-May due to the COVID-19 pandemic . On the third last day of the match, Ronaldo won his second Scudetto early with Juventus. With 31 goals this season in Serie A, he set Felice Borel's club record from the 1933/34 season . He also became the first football player with 30 seasons and 50 league goals in the Premier League , La Liga and Serie A . In the knockout phase of the Champions League , Ronaldo scored all of his team's goals, as in the previous year, but Juventus was eliminated in the round of 16 due to the away goals rule despite his brace to win the 2-1 second leg against Olympique Lyon . With 37 competitive goals within one season, Ronaldo surpassed Ferenc Hirzer's (35) club record from the 1925/26 season.

In the national team

2001–2006: Junior division and early international career

Cristiano Ronaldo in the national jersey (2010)

Cristiano Ronaldo went through the junior national teams of his country. In 2002 he played for Portugal's U17 team at the U17 European Championship . He was also part of the U20 and U21 national team and won the Toulon tournament with the latter in summer 2003 . On August 20, 2003, Ronaldo made his senior national team debut as a substitute in the second half of the game against Kazakhstan . Then he was appointed by national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to the squad of the EM 2004 in his own country. As the youngest player in the line-up, Ronaldo came across the aging “ golden generation ” of Portugal and earned a regular place alongside Luís Figo in midfield over the course of the tournament . He scored both in the 2-1 defeat in the opening game against Greece and in the 2-1 semi-final win against the Netherlands . In the final, Portugal were defeated by the opening game opponent Greece 1-0 and missed the first major title in the association's history. But Ronaldo had made his way into the " team of the tournament " with his performances . He then also took part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where he played against Iraq (2-4) and Morocco (2-1) and, despite a goal against the North Africans, was eliminated after another 2-4 defeat Costa Rica with his team in the preliminary round.

During qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Ronaldo became the Seleção's top performer and with seven goals was the fourth-best goalscorer in the UEFA zone. In the world championship tournament itself, he scored his first goal in a world championship final with a penalty against Iran . In the round of 16 against the Netherlands, he was injured after a duel against Khalid Boulahrouz , but returned to the 1-0 win in the round of the last eight teams against England . There he made a decisive result on penalties and made it to the semi-finals with his team after Portugal had previously outnumbered Ronaldo's United team-mate Wayne Rooney due to a red card . This suspension was particularly explosive, as Ronaldo was attested unsportsmanlike conduct after Rooney had assaulted Ricardo Carvalho for allegedly influencing the referee. Although referee Horacio Elizondo acquitted Ronaldo of this allegation and Rooney had already spoken out with Ronaldo immediately after the encounter in the catacombs, this incident led to a month-long smear campaign in the British tabloid media. The World Cup itself ended with Ronaldo in fourth place after two defeats against France (0: 1) and Germany (1: 3). After finishing third at the 1966 World Cup, this was the greatest success in the history of the Portuguese national team. Due to his performance, Ronaldo was considered the favorite in the election of the best young player of the tournament. Here, too, the incident in the match against England had a negative impact on his election chances: the responsible FIFA committee, headed by the German Holger Osieck , described "decent behavior" as an elementary criterion in the decision-making process and awarded the prize to Lukas Podolski .

2006–2012: Takeover of the captaincy

After the World Cup, Luís Figo and Pauleta, the last two great players of the “Golden Generation”, announced their retirement from the national team. Ronaldo was then one of the last remaining stars in the team, along with much older players such as Deco and Nuno Gomes . On February 6, 2007, one day after his 22nd birthday, he led Portugal onto the field as captain for the first time. The occasion was a friendly against Brazil . With the appointment, Portugal's coach Scolari complied with an express request from Portuguese association president Carlos Silva, who had died two days earlier. However, according to Scolari, Ronaldo was still too young to permanently take over the captaincy. Ronaldo once again contributed a total of eight goals to the successful qualification for the EM 2008 . During the tournament, Portugal qualified first in the group for the quarter-finals. Here the Portuguese lost 3-2 to Germany and had to travel home early. Ronaldo scored his only tournament goal in the group game against the Czech Republic .

Ronaldo at the Euro 2012

After the European Championship, Ronaldo was named team captain by the new Portuguese national coach, Carlos Queiroz , to lead the Portuguese to the 2010 World Cup . After mixed qualifying games , Portugal only reached a relegation place with difficulty. In the play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina , Ronaldo was out due to injury. During the tournament he was rarely able to prove his class. He scored his only tournament goal in a 7-0 victory over North Korea . From the FIFA Ronaldo was named in all three group matches each "Player of the Game". In the last sixteen Portugal lost 1-0 to eventual tournament winners Spain . As a result, Ronaldo was exposed to severe criticism in the media.

In the qualifiers for Euro 2012 Portugal launched without Ronaldo, who was suffering from an ankle injury, with a draw against Cyprus and a defeat to Norway , after Carlos Queiroz was sacked. Under the new national coach Paulo Bento , Ronaldo then played all the remaining qualifying games and, with five goals in six games, helped Portugal secure participation in the relegation games despite the botched start. In the playoffs - again against Bosnia-Herzegovina - Ronaldo led his colors after a goalless first leg with two goals to a 6-2 win in the second leg and thus to the European Championship. During the tournament, Ronaldo could not meet the expectations placed in him in the first two group games and was heavily criticized by the media for this. Then he put his stamp on the tournament with two “ man-of-the-match ” performances: In the last group game, he led his team to a 2-1 win against the Netherlands with two goals, and in the quarter-finals he scored decisive 1-0 win against the Czech Republic. In the semifinals, Portugal were eliminated on penalties against Spain and missed the second European Championship final after 2004. Ronaldo was the top scorer of the European Championship with his three goals and five other players and was voted into the “ Team of the Tournament ” as in 2004.

2012–2016: record goalscorer, record national player and European champion

Cristiano Ronaldo in a duel with Luka Modrić (2013)

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , Ronaldo completed his 100th international match on October 16, 2012 as the third Portuguese after Fernando Couto and Luís Figo and the third-youngest European after Lukas Podolski and Kristen Viikmäe . On September 6, 2013, he scored his first hat-trick in the national shirt after falling 2-1 down in a 4-2 win in the World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland . After the direct qualification was missed, Portugal prevailed in the relegation games against Sweden 4-2 on both sides. Ronaldo scored all four of his country's goals, including another hat trick in the second leg. With 47 international goals, he caught Portugal's record goal scorer Pauleta and qualified as the first Portuguese for the third time for the World Cup. Although Ronaldo's participation in the final tournament was at risk for a long time due to a tendinitis and a muscle injury in his left leg, he ultimately completed all preliminary round matches. His performance fell short of public expectations. Only in the last group game did he score a 2-1 win over Ghana with his 50th international goal and was voted " Man of the Match ". With goals in six consecutive world and European championships, he set Jürgen Klinsmann's record . However, Portugal retired after the preliminary round for the first time since 2002 due to the worse goal difference .

Ronaldo in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016 against Poland

Portugal's start to qualifying for Euro 2016 was the same as four years before: Without the ailing Ronaldo, the opening game against Albania in front of a home crowd was lost 1-0 and national coach Paulo Bento was then replaced by Fernando Santos . In the following two qualifying games against Denmark and Armenia , Ronaldo scored the 1-0 winning goal. With a total of 23 goals in qualifying and finals matches of the European Championship, he broke the record of Hakan Şükür and Jon Dahl Tomasson (22). After the successful qualification, the European Championship started sobering. The Portuguese did not manage to win in the group stage . A 1-1 draw in the opening match against Iceland was followed by a goalless draw with Austria , with Ronaldo missing a penalty and replacing Luís Figo as the record international player with his 128th international match . In the last group game he saved his selection with two goals in a 3-3 draw against Hungary . With the new tournament mode, third group rank was enough for the Portuguese to qualify for the knockout round. In the round of 16, a 1-0 win after extra time against Croatia followed , with Ronaldo's saved shot in the 117th minute as a template for the winning goal scorer Ricardo Quaresma . Portugal won the quarter-finals against Poland on penalties, in the course of which Ronaldo also scored from the penalty spot. In the 2-0 semi-final win against Wales , Ronaldo proved with one goal and one assist as a trailblazer for the second final appearance after 2004. In the final against France, however, he suffered a knee injury after just eight minutes when Dimitri Payet in his main leg with great force Knee height met. Despite two breaks in treatment, he had to be replaced in the 25th minute. When the game went into overtime, Ronaldo returned to the bench and acted alongside national coach Santos as a motivator. Portugal ultimately won the game with a goal from Éder, which meant the first major international title. With a total of nine goals in 21 appearances at European Championships Ronaldo had during the tournament scoring record of Michel Platini equalized and Edwin van der Sar and Lilian Thuram (per 16 appearances) and EM Most games replaced.

2016 – today: Nations League win

Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2017 Confed Cup

As a result of winning the European Championship, Ronaldo took part in the FIFA Confederations Cup in June 2017, finishing third with Portugal. However, he left before the game for third place to visit his newborn twins at home.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , Ronaldo once again missed the opening game, which was subsequently lost 2-0 to Switzerland . In the remaining nine qualifying games, Ronaldo contributed 15 goals and three assists as the top scorer in the UEFA zone to Portugal nevertheless qualifying directly for the final tournament. In the first group game of the World Cup, a 3-3 draw against Spain, he scored all of his team's goals. As the fourth player after Pelé , Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose , Ronaldo scored in four World Cup finals. In the second group game he scored the 1-0 winning goal against Morocco and replaced Ferenc Puskás as the European record scorer with 85 international goals. In the last group game against Iran, he missed a penalty kick, but still secured qualification for the round of 16 with Portugal. There he was eliminated after a 2-1 loss to Uruguay . Despite the early elimination, he was one of the top scorers of the tournament with four goals .

After the World Cup, Ronaldo decided not to take part in the group matches of the newly introduced UEFA Nations League and did not play an international match by the end of the year. After returning to the squad in March 2019 for the first qualifying matches for EM 2021 , he took part in the final round of the Nations League, which was played in Portugal, in June 2019 . He scored all three goals in the semi-finals for a 3-1 win against Switzerland and celebrated Portugal's second title win after a 1-0 win in the final against the Netherlands. In November 2019, Portugal successfully qualified for the finals of the EM 2021 after eleven Ronaldo goals in eight qualifying games.

Style of play

Ronaldo is a versatile offensive player who can be used on both the left and right flanks or in the attack center. He has both feet, so he achieves roughly the same shot hardness and precision with both feet, and is one of the fastest footballers in the world, both with and without the ball. Tactically, Ronaldo has gone through several developments in the course of his career. At Sporting Lisbon and in his first season at Manchester United, he was usually used as a traditional right midfielder, where he mainly appeared as a cross and assist donor in appearance. In this position he used his acceleration, his speed, as well as his agility and technique to compete in one-on-one situations with opponents. Ronaldo was particularly known for his tricks and dribbling. In addition to his trademark, the multiple " stepping over ", he acquired an extensive repertoire of offensive tricks and feints.

At Manchester United, Ronaldo developed a muscular build that made it easier for him to hold balls. His strong legs and above-average jumping ability, in combination with his size and timing, often give him advantages in air and header duels. As a result, Ronaldo is a dangerous buyer of high crosses in the street area, which is proven by over 100 header goals in his career. Combined with his improved stamina, Ronaldo's goal risk increased dramatically when he moved to the left wing and was given the positional freedom to orientate himself towards the center of the storm in order to complete his team's attacking plays. Thanks to his good overview and his precise passing game, he also increasingly moved into a creative role.

Ronaldo before taking a free kick (March 2009)

In his final years at Manchester United, Ronaldo played even more aggressively and centrally. In his last season in particular, he was often used as the sole striker or part of a double storm, depending on his tactical focus. In Manchester he developed into a prominent goalscorer who, thanks to his powerful and precise shot outside the penalty area, is just as dangerous as inside the 16-meter area, as well as a reliable penalty taker and specialist in set pieces. He has scored over 50 free-kick goals so far, often using a special shooting technique in which he causes the ball to drop abruptly with the help of high topspin . However, his success rate on free kicks deteriorated significantly in the later years of his career. His ritual of standing in a wide-legged cowboy pose before taking free kicks became one of his trademarks.

After moving to Real Madrid, Ronaldo became even more offensive and his creative and defensive tasks more manageable. By Manuel Pellegrini , he was mostly used in a two-tower from Jose Mourinho , however, restored to the left wing. From there he could drift into the middle to take off crosses and score goals, or move defenders off the ball to the outside lane to make room for teammates in the penalty area. With Madrid's counterattacking style, Ronaldo became even more efficient and consistent, as demonstrated by numerous goal records. His unique role has been described by experts as that of a "wrong" winger, as Ronaldo sometimes acted in the style of a center-forward with his runs into the box, even though he was actually playing on the left wing. In exceptional tactical cases, Ronaldo was also used as a striker, for example in the Spanish Cup final in 2011. From 2013, Ronaldo adapted his style - first under Carlo Ancelotti and later under Zinédine Zidane - to the physical consequences of aging: his effective dribbling and strenuous tempo runs became less often, his game more effectively. In the meantime, he mainly appears as a striker in the penalty area and scores most of his goals within the 16-meter space, mostly with just a few touches of the ball. In this context, he was praised in the media for his intelligent positional play, his opportunism and his ability to shake off opponents, make room in the penalty area and score a goal with just a few touches of the ball.

At Juventus Turin, Ronaldo took on different attacking roles under Massimiliano Allegri depending on the tactical orientation. So he played at times in a 4–2–3–1 formation as the sole striker or in a 4–3–3 system on the left wing. Occasionally he also formed an attacking duo with a teammate in a 4–3–1–2, 4–4–2 or 3–5–2 formation. In these roles he not only scored goals himself, but also increasingly found himself in one-on-one duels and prepared more opportunities for teammates than in his last years at Real Madrid.

During his time in England, but also sporadically in Spain, Ronaldo was said to have a penchant for " swallows ", the pretense of an opposing foul through theatrical behavior. His sometimes cocky and selfish style of play at the beginning of his career also brought him criticism from coach Alex Ferguson . Because of his facial expressions and gestures on the field, he was also often accused of arrogance. Team players, coaches and journalists have pointed out that this has contributed to a wrong personality image. Interviews like the one in 2011, in which Ronaldo justified whistling against himself by saying that he was rich, good-looking and a great player and thus aroused envy, he described in retrospect in 2014 as a mistake and a result of a lack of maturity. Ronaldo is known for his eagerness to train, his leadership skills and his will to win. Thanks to his mental strength, he is particularly in top form in important games and high pressure situations. His successes or records in three European leagues and the national team are proof of his adaptability and his constant search for new challenges.

In addition to his fashion line and perfume series, Ronaldo invested around 37 million euros in a joint venture with the Portuguese hotel chain Pestana at the end of 2015 in the construction of four hotels in Funchal, Lisbon, Madrid and New York . The hotels in Funchal and Lisbon opened in July and October 2016, respectively. Two more hotels are now planned in Paris and Marrakech . social commitment

When television images of a child in Aceh who had survived the catastrophe in a Portugal jersey went around the world after the 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean , Ronaldo visited Indonesia in 2005 , solicited donations and sponsored the boy. Later Ronaldo worked as an ambassador for the Mangrove Care Forum at the side of the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for the protection of the mangrove forests in Bali . Ronaldo has been the global ambassador for the children's rights organization Save the Children since January 2013 . Since October 2015 he has also been supporting the # BeThe1Donor campaign of the Abbott pharmaceutical company as a testimonial, which aims to encourage young people to donate blood regularly . Ronaldo is one of the most charitable athletes. After the Champions League triumph in 2016, he donated his prize money of 600,000 euros to charity. In October 2017, he sold his 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or trophy at an auction in London , and the proceeds of £ 600,000 were donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation , the fulfillment of heartfelt desires seriously ill children.

tax evasion

On June 13, 2017, the Madrid public prosecutor brought charges against Ronaldo and accused him of concealing advertising money in front of the tax office with a company network in Ireland and the British Virgin Islands from 2011 to 2014 and thus evading taxes of 14.7 million euros to have. This had the mirror above together with the research network European Investigative Collaborations within the Football leaks found. Ronaldo's management denied the allegations, stating that there was no intention of fraud or obfuscation. The company network had existed since Ronaldo's time at Manchester United. The business was known to the British and Spanish authorities. At the end of July 2018, it was reported that Ronaldo had reached an agreement with the Spanish public prosecutor and pleaded guilty to four tax offenses. The original allegation of tax evasion in the amount of 14.7 million euros was therefore reduced to 5.7 million euros. In the course of this, Ronaldo had to pay 18.8 million euros and was given an almost two-year suspended sentence (23 months and 30 days). In Spain, prison sentences of less than two years are usually suspended.

Rape charge

In June 2017, Der Spiegel magazine reported on a rape allegation against Ronaldo from 2009 in Las Vegas , based on documents from the Football Leaks fund . An out-of-court settlement was reached in 2010 , during which the American Kathryn Mayorga was sworn to silence in return for a payment of $ 375,000. In September 2018, through a first interview with the woman, it became public that her lawyer is contesting this settlement in the US state of Nevada in a civil suit . On September 27, the Nevada District Court accepted the 32-page lawsuit. On October 1, 2018, the Las Vegas police announced that they would reopen a preliminary investigation after being reported to the case in June 2009. The investigations at that time had been suspended because the police had not received any information about the location or specific persons. Ronaldo rejects the rape accusation. The sex was consensual. On July 22, 2019, the Clark County Procuratorate, Nevada, announced that no charges would be brought because, based on a review of the information provided, the allegations of sexual assault could not be beyond doubt. The civil action is still pending. Mayorga's attorneys are demanding payment of at least another $ 200,000 and a public trial. In February 2020, the responsible magistrate judge found that none of the plaintiff's arguments justified annulment of the out-of-court settlement and recommended that only confidential arbitration should take place.
