The Costa Rican national soccer team , also known as Los Ticos , is the selection team of the Federación Costarricense de Fútbol . The team from the Central American state of Costa Rica has so far qualified for the five soccer world championships in 1990 , 2002 , 2006 , 2014 and 2018 . In 1990 she reached the second round in a group with Brazil in the preliminary round as second behind Brazil , while in 2002 she was eliminated in a group with Brazil in the preliminary round only because of the worse goal difference with Turkey . In 2006 Costa Rica had to return home early after zero points from three games. In 2014 , the greatest success in a World Cup was achieved with the quarter-finals. The Costa Rican national soccer team was eliminated in the preliminary round in 2018 with one point from a draw.
Participation in world championships
1990 World Cup in Italy
The 1990 World Cup in Italy was the first in which the Costa Rican national team participated. At the same time, reaching the round of 16 after victories against Sweden (2-1) and Scotland (1-0) up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was the greatest success the national team has ever achieved. In the second round, Costa Rica lost 4-1 to the ČSFR and was eliminated from the tournament.
2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan
The 2002 World Cup meant the Costa Rican national team's second participation in the World Cup. In the opening game, the Costa Ricans defeated China 2-0, which initially brought the group C to the top of the table, as Brazil had only defeated Turkey 2-1 the day before . In the second game Costa Rica separated from later third Turkey with 1: 1.
Since Brazil had defeated China 4-0 the day before, Costa Rica needed at least one draw in the last group game to advance safely. The game against the eventual group winners and world champions Brazil, who at the time had already qualified for the round of 16, was lost 2-5. As Turkey won their game against China 3-0 at the same time, Costa Rica was eliminated as third in Group C due to the poorer goal difference.
World Cup 2006 in Germany
The qualification for the World Cup in 2006 was very difficult and mixed for Costa Rica. The national team was only just able to prevail against Cuba in the first round . This was followed in the second round after starting the group stage with two defeats, winning the group with 10 out of 18 possible points. The qualification then succeeded in the third round in the group with the last remaining six teams by third place and 16 out of 30 possible points.
Costa Rica played in the first game of the World Cup finals, the opening game, on June 9, 2006 in Munich against the German national soccer team and lost this game 2: 4. Costa Rica were able to take advantage of the few scoring opportunities (both goals scored by Paulo Wanchope ), but otherwise, especially in the early stages of the game, only found themselves in front of their own goal.
The next group game against Ecuador was also lost 3-0. Costa Rica fell behind early on, while they were unable to develop their own game. This defeat meant the early elimination of Costa Rica, which was now six points behind the group runners-up Germany.
The last, meaningless game against the also eliminated Poland was lost 1: 2. After the preliminary round, Costa Rica was eliminated from the tournament as fourth and thus bottom of group A with six points behind the second place qualifying for the round of 16 (3 games, 3 defeats, 3: 9 goals, 0 points).
World Cup 2010 in South Africa
As part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , the team met Grenada in the second round of the CONCACAF zone . The first leg in St. George’s ( Grenada ) ended 2-2, the second leg took place on June 21 in San José and was won 3-0. Thus Costa Rica moved into the third round. Here the team met Haiti , El Salvador and Suriname . The group was confidently finished in first place with 18 out of 18 possible points. Costa Rica won all games and achieved a goal difference of 20: 3. The highlight was the 7-0 win against Suriname in San José on September 6, 2008.
On February 11, 2009, the Costa Rican national team started the fourth and final round, in which they met Honduras , El Salvador , Trinidad & Tobago , USA and Mexico . There Costa Rica finished fourth due to the worse goal difference compared to Honduras and met Uruguay in two relegation games . Costa Rica lost 1-0 in the first leg, but only scored 1-1 in the second leg and thus did not qualify for the World Cup.
2014 World Cup in Brazil
On September 10, 2013, Costa Rica qualified early for the 2014 World Cup . Opponents on the way to Brazil were Honduras , Jamaica , Mexico , Panama and the USA . In the group stage of the finals, Costa Rica met Uruguay in the first game, which they defeated 3-1. The Costa Rican selection won against Italy 1-0 and thus reached the second round for the first time since 1990; thanks to a 0-0 win in the last game of the group stage against England , they even won the group.
On June 29, Costa Rica played Greece for the first time in the round of 16 . Costa Rica went first by Bryan Ruiz after 52 minutes with a 1: 0 lead, played by a yellow-red card against Óscar Duarte after 66 minutes with ten men and had in injury time to 1: 1 compensation by Sokratis accept . After goalless extra time , Costa Rica won 5-3 on penalties. The selection is now in the quarter-finals of the tournament, where it met the Netherlands on July 5, 2014 . After it was still 0-0 after 120 minutes, it went to penalties, in which Ruiz and Umaña each missed. Thus, the Netherlands moved into the semi-finals against Argentina. The qualification for the round of the best eight meant the most successful result in a world championship finals in Costa Rica's history.
World Cup 2018 in Russia
In qualifying, Costa Rica was seeded for the fourth round of the North, Central America and Caribbean Confederation. With five wins and one draw, the Ticos won Group B. In the fifth round, the team finished second behind Mexico with four wins, four draws and two defeats , thus qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . In the preliminary round, Costa Rica will meet Brazil again, as well as Switzerland and Serbia .
