Career
society
At the age of 18 Ruiz made his debut in the Primera División de Costa Rica , the top division of his home country. First behind the regular players Rolando Fonseca and Froylán Ledezma as striker number three, Ruiz soon developed as a real alternative to both. In 2004 the team won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup and brought this title back to the country for the first time in eight years. With this, Ruiz won an international competition early in his young career. At the end of the following season, the attacker and his team managed to win the national championship and the Copa Interclubes UNCAF . Because of his good performances, he was forced to play his way into the starting line-up of Alajuelense. In 2005/06 he was the ultimate top performer of his club and caught the attention of European teams. So there was a move to the Belgian club KAA Gent in the summer of 2006 . The offensive player signed a four-year contract in Ghent. He quickly got used to the new league and impressed the fans with good performances. For the 2008/09 season he was his team's top scorer and was voted Player of the Season by KAA supporters. From then on, many clubs vied for the striker's favor. Finally, on May 15, 2009, the Dutch club FC Twente Enschede announced that they had signed the Costa Rican. As in Ghent, Ruiz signed a four-year contract with the new club. In Enschede he was supposed to replace Eljero Elia . Ruiz made his debut in the Eredivisie on August 1, 2009 in the away game against Sparta Rotterdam . In the 2-0 win, he also scored his first goal for the new team. At the end of the season, Ruiz was able to win the Dutch championship with his new club. It was the club's first in existence. The striker scored 24 goals, making him the team's best attacker.
At the end of August 2011 he moved to Fulham FC . On January 14, 2014, he was loaned to the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven .
From December 2015 to May 2018 he played for Sporting Lisbon and won the Supercup with the Portuguese on August 9, 2015 against city rivals Benfica and the League Cup on January 27, 2018. He then moved to Brazil for FC Santos .
National team
Ruiz already played in the youth teams of the national soccer team of Costa Rica before he was nominated for the first time for the A-Elf. In 2005 he was nominated in the squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup , where they failed in the quarterfinals at Honduras . Ruiz was used in all games during the competition and was able to contribute one hit. Two years later, he missed participating in the Gold Cup again due to an injury. At the 2014 World Cup , he was the captain of his team and scored the decisive 1-0 goal in the preliminary round match against Italy , which secured the early entry into the knockout round. In the round of 16 against Greece he gave his team a 1-0 lead with his second World Cup goal. After equalizing in stoppage time and a goalless extra time, Costa-Rica prevailed after a 1-1 penalty shoot-out that saw Ruiz convert his penalty. In the quarter-finals, the Central Americans finally failed to the Netherlands - also on penalties. This time, however, Ruiz did not keep his nerve and failed from the point on Tim Krul .
He also took part in the 2018 World Cup as captain with Costa Rica. After defeats against Serbia (0: 1) and Brazil (0: 2), they achieved a 2: 2 in the last game against Switzerland . He shot a penalty on the crossbar in stoppage time. The ball hit the back of the head of the Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer and from there into the goal. The goal was considered an own goal by FIFA. Despite winning points, Costa Rica was eliminated as the bottom of the group.
At the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup , he led his team to the quarter-finals against Mexico . Although he was able to compensate for the 1-0 lead of the Mexicans with his last international goal in the 52nd minute, he was substituted in the 111th minute and his team lost the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
