society

Sommer began playing football at FC Herrliberg and moved to Concordia Basel at the age of nine . In 2003 he joined the youth team at FC Basel .

He received his first professional contract with FC Basel in 2005 and became a regular goalkeeper for their U21 team in the first division . He was taken over to the first team for the 2006/07 season and was third goalkeeper behind the Argentine Franco Costanzo and the Liberian Louis Crayton . He received a new contract with FCB in July 2007, but in order to gain match practice, he was loaned to the Liechtenstein club FC Vaduz in the second-rate Challenge League , where he was the goalkeeper until January 2009. In the 2007/08 season he was with the team champion of the Challenge League and rose to the highest league. At the beginning of January 2009, FC Basel Sommer called back to the first team after the previous goalkeeper Franco Costanzo was injured. For the 2009/10 season , Sommer was loaned out by FC Basel to the Grasshopper Club Zurich for a year . For the 2010/11 season , Sommer returned to FCB as the second goalkeeper and became Swiss champions as a substitute goalkeeper.

In the subsequent 2011/12 season, he ousted the Argentine Costanzo as the goalkeeper. Again he and his team became Swiss champions and also Swiss cup winners . In the cup competition, he played his part by saving two penalties in the final on May 16, 2012 (result 1: 1 after extra time ) . At the end of the 2012/13 season , Sommer became Swiss champions for the third time with FC Basel. The team also finished the 2013/14 football championship for the 17th time as champions (for the fifth time in a row). Sommer became Swiss champion for the fourth time and was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. Basel's Champions League season ended after the group stage, and in the Europa League they made it to the quarter-finals. Sommer had a total of 53 appearances in competitive games and five in friendly matches.

Summer at Borussia Mönchengladbach (2015)

For the 2014/15 season , Sommer moved to the German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach , with whom he signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2019. He made his competitive debut on August 16, 2014 in a 3-1 win against the regional league club FC 08 Homburg in the first round of the DFB Cup and was the successor to Marc-André ter Stegen as the new regular goalkeeper from the preparatory phase. In the Bundesliga he made his debut on August 24, 2014 in a 1-1 home game against VfB Stuttgart on matchday one . In his first first half of the season he had a share in Borussia's new club record of 18 unbeaten games in a row.
