Julio César Villalba Gaona (born September 17, 1998 in Ciudad del Este ) is a Paraguayan football player . The striker is under contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Career

society

The 1.74-meter-tall offensive player Villalba comes from the youth division of the Paraguayan first division club Cerro Porteño . Both his uncle Gerardo Villalba and his grandfather also played for the club. With the club's U-20, Julio Villalba took part in the Copa Libertadores Sub-20 in 2016 and scored one goal in a total of three appearances. In the same year he was also used in 16 games in the Primera División and scored four goals. In addition, he also completed a short personal goalless assignment at the Copa Sudamericana 2016 . The following year he played 13 first division matches and one game in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana . He scored two or one hit.

For the 2017/18 season he moved to the German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach . Borussia had already signed him in 2016 and, according to Villalbas, provided him with a five-year contract. While the Paraguayan press reported the commitment as completed at the end of January 2016, the official confirmation from the club from the Rhineland was still pending at the beginning of February 2016. His final move to Germany was originally planned for January 2017. However, Villalba initially stayed on loan with the club from the Paraguayan capital Asunción until July 2017 . The Paraguayan press reported a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros. Borussia Mönchengladbach have secured 70 percent of the transfer rights.

For Gladbach, the Paraguayan only played in the 2017/18 season in the Bundesliga , in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons he did not play, also due to injuries. In addition, due to his South American origins, he is not eligible to play for the U23 .

The striker was then loaned to SCR Altach in January 2020 until the end of the season in the Austrian Bundesliga . By the end of the loan, he made eight Bundesliga appearances.

National team

Villalba participated with the Paraguayan U17 national team in 2015 in both the U17 South American Championship and the World Cup. While he completed eight games (no goal) at the South American Championship, he was used three times at the World Cup and scored two goals. He was also part of Paraguay's U20 squad between 2016 and 2018 . The attacker played two tournament games with her at the U20 South American Championship (no goal).
