Ciudad del Este (German City of the East ) is the second largest city in Paraguay after Asunción and the capital of the Alto Paraná department . Due to its strategic location in the tri-border region between Argentina , Brazil and Paraguay, the Triple Frontera , it is a shopping and trading center. The population is 320,782 (as of 2008).
history
The city was founded in 1957 under the name Puerto Flor de Lis on Paraná on the border with Brazil . It was later renamed Puerto Presidente Stroessner after Alfredo Stroessner , after Stroessner's fall (1989) it was given its current name. The city grew rapidly with the construction of the Itaipu Dam . The Friendship Bridge spanning the river connects Ciudad del Este with Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil.
The diocese Ciudad del Este was founded in 1968 as a territorial prelature and elevated to a diocese in 1993. The Cathedral of St. Blaise (San Blas) was built in 1964.

According to South American standards, there are relatively many Muslims living in the city . a. from Lebanon . Ciudad del Este also has its own mosque , the Mezquita del este .
education
The private Universidad Americana has one of its offices in Ciudad del Este, next to Asunción and Encarnación . The state Universidad Nacional del Este is also located here.
economy
The center of the city is characterized by trade and has the character of a bazaar due to the many stalls of outpatient traders. Only part of this trade is legal, whereas a large part is based on smuggling with neighboring countries Argentina and Brazil . Many counterfeit branded items are also sold.

About 20 km west of the city, in the Minga Guazú district, is the international airport Aeropuerto Internacional Guaraní ( IATA airport code AGT, ICAO code SGES).
The 193 km long Route 7 to Coronel Oviedo and then the Route 2 connects Ciudad del Este with the capital Asunción.
With the bridge Puente de la Amistad (Friendship Bridge) over the Paraná, the city is connected to the Brazilian Foz do Iguaçu. From there there is a bridge connection over the Rio Iguazú to Puerto Iguazú in Argentina .
Trivia
The novel "The Giggles of the General" by Gisbert Haefs is largely set in Ciudad del Este and shows an excellent knowledge of the city and life there.
Part of the Navy CIS episode “Blau wie Kobalt” also plays there. The city is also featured in the movie " Miami Vice " as a location.
