Coronel Oviedo is the capital of the Caaguazú department in Paraguay and covers an area of 878.80 km². The city has around 52,400 inhabitants (2006 estimate) .
location
The place is 132 kilometers east of the capital Asunción and is the hometown of the ex-president of Paraguay Nicanor Duarte Frutos . Coronel of Oviedo in Paraguay traffic strategic importance due to its location on the line between Asuncion and Ciudad del Este and a crossover point of the remote connections Ruta 2 , Ruta 7 and Ruta 8 .
Surname
The original name of the city when it was founded in 1778 was Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Ajos ("Our Lady of the Garlic Rosary"), as the cultivation of garlic was an important basis for trade in the city. In February 1931, on the initiative of residents, the city was named after Coronel Oviedo Florentin , a war hero from the Triple Alliance War . The unofficial nickname of the city is due to the alleged hard work of its residents, the "capital of work" (Spanish: Capital de trabajo ).
Events / facilities
- The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Coronel Oviedo and is the general starting point for the annual pilgrimage on December 8th (82 km) to Caacupé .
- Missionary Brothers of St. Francis have maintained a mission station in Coronel Oviedo in the Santa Lucia district since 1962.
- In Coronel Oviedo, the Ajos fair takes place every spring on the exhibition grounds on the outskirts of the city.
Infrastructure
Coronel Oviedo has a bus station with connections to Asunción and Ciudad del Este, a football stadium with turf , several hotels , basic medical care and a wide range of state and private educational institutions in primary, secondary and higher education.
The city dwellers live mainly from the trade in food, textiles, vehicles and electronic devices as well as from service providers and independent craftsmen .
While the streets in the city center are largely paved , most residential areas are next to unpaved roads. When it rains heavily between September and February, the city can sometimes experience power outages and domestic water supplies are impaired .
The household waste Coronel Oviedo is on a wild landfill disposal, about seven kilometers outside the city center and there partly for recycling processed.
In a 100 meter zone around the town hall ( la plazuela ), the city administration offers free wireless Internet ( W-LAN ) without an access password and time limit.
