Encarnación is the capital of the departments of Itapúa in Paraguay and has around 130,000 inhabitants of the largest cities in the country. It is located on the Paraná River on the border with Argentina .
geography
The city lies on the right bank of the Rio Paraná, which is up to six kilometers wide here, opposite the Argentine city of Posadas , with which it is connected by the Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz . The Paraguayan highways Ruta 1 and Ruta 6 start and end here. The railway line from Buenos Aires also ends in Encarnación . The city has three wide sandy beaches: Playa Mboy Ka'é, Playa San José and Playa San Isidro . Encarnación is often referred to as the pearl of the south because of its mild climate and its beauty .
The city was originally divided into two areas, the higher modern part (also the financial center of the city) and the old town in the immediate vicinity of the Río Paraná. Among the approximately 130,000 inhabitants (as of 2017) there are many of German, Japanese, Arab, Ukrainian, New Zealand, Chinese and also Polish descent.
history
The city was founded on 25. March 1615 by Jesuit Father Roque González de Santa Cruz on the banks of the Rio Parana as a Jesuit reduction founded and received with respect to the calendrical feast of announcing the birth of Christ the name of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Itapua ( "Our Lady of the Incarnation of Itapúa ”). On the instructions of the two consuls Carlos Antonio López and Mariano Roque Alonso , the shortened name was officially set in 1843 . The place gained importance in 1854 as part of the construction of the railway line from Central Paraguay.
Encarnacíon is considered the capital of the Paraguayan Carnival, which has been celebrated there since 1916. The Sambadrom has 8,500 spectators.
In 1957, the Encarnación diocese was founded as a territorial prelature ; In 1990 this was raised to a diocese. Current bishop (since 2014) is Mons. Francisco Javier Pistilli Scorzara .
After the completion of the Yacyretá hydropower plant , around 90 km downstream, the water level of the Paraná began to rise by seven meters in 2011. The riverside districts of the Zona Baja were completely flooded. A total of 40,000 people had to be relocated.
tourism
Tourism in Encarnación has increased very strongly in recent years, the city is now one of the most important tourist reference points in the country and in the summer even the most important tourist city of Paraguay in terms of the number of tourists in these months. It was therefore nicknamed the capital of summer . Especially after the redesign of the Costanera San José beach promenade in December 2011, even more tourists were drawn to the city's three beaches, which are freely accessible to everyone. It had to be relocated after the water level of the Paraná rose by seven meters after the construction of a dam. In addition, the nearby dining, shopping and leisure facilities such as theme parks are some of the most popular places for tourists. There are restaurants with local and international cuisine, discos, night clubs, cinemas, 5-star hotels and parks.
The traditional carnival incarnations take place between January and February each year in the city's new Sambódromo or civic center and are considered the largest carnival in the country. Even after the season there is the Trans-Itapúa or Codasur rally, the Expo Itapúa, among other attractions.
