Capitán Miranda is a district in the Itapúa department in Paraguay with around 14,000 inhabitants. It borders the city of Encarnación and was created in 1957 as a split from the Encarnación district. It is named after a soldier from Encarnación who died in the Chaco War. The district is often referred to as the melting pot of races due to its great ethnic heterogeneity. The official nickname is the capital of horticulture (Capital de la Horticultura).

history

The district was initially settled by the indigenous people of the Mbya , who originally came from the area of today's Caaguazú Department . They hunted and collected in the then existing dense tropical jungle. With the Spanish colonizers, the first Jesuits came to this area as missionaries who brought with them modern techniques such as forging and the manufacture of iron tools. Musical instruments, painting, ceramics and the plow were also unknown to the indigenous people.

The first European immigrants came to the area in 1917. They came from Volhynia in Ukraine. In 1927 they founded the Nueva Volyn colony in what is now the Capitán Miranda district . In 1949, 77 of the 95 properties were owned by Ukrainian, Russian or Polish immigrants. German immigrants from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul also came to the Volyn colony. From 1950 to 1964 Belgians came from the Congo . From 1954 immigrants from Japan followed, who settled in the Federico Chávez colony. After an agreement between Paraguay and Japan was concluded in 1959 to accept 85,000 Japanese nationals, more were added, who founded the colonies of Fuji and Pirapó. The jobs created by immigrants drew poorer, local families from across Paraguay.

economy

The main industry is agriculture. The main products are tomatoes and peppers, which are grown in greenhouses. In addition, lettuce, cucumber, cabbage, melons and pumpkins are harvested.

Airport

The Teniente Amín Ayub González Airport, which was built in 2010 and has also been equipped for night flights since 2016, is located in the Capitán Miranda district . Regular air traffic connects the city of Encarnación with the capital Asunción.
