Cambyretá is a district in the Itapúa department in southern Paraguay . It lies on the banks of the Río Paraná and has about 55,000 inhabitants. The name comes from the language of the indigenous people Guaraní and means land of milk (from kamby = milk and retá = land).

The district was created on April 23, 1947 as a split from the Encarnación district . The first European settlers to settle here from 1911 onwards were German immigrants. They ran agriculture and livestock. It is believed that the Guaraní name of the place derives from it.

When a drought broke out in Paraguay between 1942 and 1944, many Paraguayan families from other parts of the country moved to the town. In 1947, however, a plague of locusts occurred in Cambyretá, which destroyed the cassava and corn harvests and brought great poverty to many families.

The district has developed extremely well in recent years. The population has doubled since 2010. Agricultural production and trade have risen sharply. A tourist embankment (Costanera) along the Río Paraná and a 15 m high observation building were under construction in 2018. An amphitheater for cultural events with a view over the river has already been completed . These projects are financed by the Yacyretá hydropower plant .
