The Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz is a 1,610-meter-long cable-stayed bridge over the Rio Paraná , which connects the two cities of Posadas in the Argentine province of Misiones and Encarnación in the Itapúa department of Paraguay. In addition to the road connection between the two countries, there is also a train connection between the two cities, which are opposite each other on the two river banks. The diesel railcars run every 15 minutes between the two stations of the standard-gauge line.
The road and rail bridge was built between 1982 and 1990. Although the construction time was only estimated to be three years, the construction work took eight years - due to bureaucratic obstacles, financial difficulties and an extraordinary flood during the foundation phase . The construction work was carried out by a consortium led by the Italian company Salini Impregilo .
The bridge was built to compensate for Paraguay's land loss through the construction of the Yacyretá dam. It is named after the founder of the two cities it connects, the Jesuit Roque González de Santa Cruz .
