history

The city goes back to the Jesuit reduction Nuestra Señora de Itapúa , which was founded in 1615 . It was moved to the north bank of the Río Paraná in 1625 and was thus the cornerstone for Encarnación . In 1628 a new reduction was created in the area of today's Posadas, which was called San José and remained in place until the 19th century. During the Triple Alianza war against Paraguay in 1867, a Brazilian military base called Trinchera de San José was established. In 1879 the place was renamed Posadas. When the province of Misiones was separated from the province of Corrientes in 1881 , the capital was initially relocated to the remote San Martín . Posadas became the provincial capital in 1884 after protests by the new provincial government.

In 1957 Pope Pius XII. the Roman Catholic diocese of Posadas was established. The episcopal church is the Catedral San José . In 1973 the Universidad Nacional de Misiones was founded in Posadas.

Attractions

Buildings

Featured in buildings are the neo-Romanesque built style Cathedral of San José of 1876, which in 1937 completely renovated and was partially changed, and the government palace from the late 19th century.

Museums

The Natural Science and History Museum is dedicated to the flora and fauna of the province of Misiones and its primeval forests, but also to the culture of the indigenous people, the Guaraní . The Archaeological and Historical Museum Andrés Guacurarí has also exhibited exhibits from the Guaraní culture and is also dedicated to the Jesuit reductions and the time of the Argentine Wars of Liberation. The two most famous art museums are the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes Lucas Braulio Areco , also called Mate Palace because it was donated by a yerba mate growing company, and the Museo de Arte Juan Yaparí .

Parks and green spaces

The most important park is the Parque República del Paraguay in the north of the city. There is a craft market, an amphitheater and a regional museum with a historical and scientific part on its premises . Other parks are the Parque de la Ciudad in the southwest and Parque Adam with a botanical garden in the southeast.

economy

Posadas is mainly characterized by industry and trade with nearby Paraguay . The processing of Yerba Mate , a tea drink, has its center here.

The Yacyretá hydropower plant , which dams the Río Paraná about 35 kilometers west of the city, is the fourth largest and at the same time one of the most controversial dams in the world. It supplies electricity to much of northeastern Argentina .

traffic

bus

Posadas is also increasingly becoming an important transport hub in national and international bus traffic. Due to poor access and the increase in traffic, the bus terminal was relocated from the center to the outskirts of the city a few years ago. From here the national bus routes traditionally go to Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata . In recent years, thanks to tourism, the number of "cross-connections" has increased, so that trips to Rosario , Tucumán and Salta are also offered. In the international connections routes to Southeast Brazil and Paraguay have been added. The classic Mercosur routes from Buenos Aires via Posadas to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have been reinforced. The international shuttle bus service to Encarnación in Paraguay also departs from the terminal . There are mainly two routes used in regional bus transport: The first follows Ruta Nacional 12 and ends in Puerto Iguazú . The second branches off from Ruta Nacional 12 in Cruce Santa Ana and serves the cities and towns on the Río Uruguay or the towns in Central Misiones. Both routes are approached every hour on average. Several city bus routes run from the terminal to the center of Posadas and to the airport.

plane

Posadas can also be reached by plane. At the " Aeropuerto Libertador Don José De San Martín " a connection to the domestic airport of Buenos Aires Jorge Newbery is offered twice a day . These flights are operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas or Austral. The owner and main operator is Fuerza Aérea Argentina , the civil part is operated by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 .

train

After a ten-year break, the "El Gran Capitan" train to Buenos Aires to Federico Lacroze station has been running twice a week since 2003 . With a scheduled journey time of 26 hours, the train was considerably slower and not nearly as comfortable as the modern coaches and was discontinued in May 2012 until further notice.

Diesel multiple units run over the Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz , which connect the two opposite cities of Posadas and Encarnación on the respective river banks every 15 minutes.
