Mar del Plata ( Spanish for Silver Sea) is the largest and most famous seaside resort in Argentina . The city is located in the southeast of the province of Buenos Aires and has a permanent population of around 600,000.
history
Mar del Plata was founded in 1874 by Patricio Peralta Ramos , but was initially only an insignificant port with a salt factory. However, after it was connected to the country's railway network in 1886, more and more visitors came, and in 1888 the first hotel was opened. Within a few years, the businessman Pedro Luro transformed the place into a seaside resort modeled on the French Biarritz . As early as 1890, Mar del Plata was a very popular holiday resort and the city's growth could not be stopped.
After the end of the Second World War, months after Germany's surrender, the German submarines U 530 and U 977 surrendered independently of one another in the port of Mar del Plata.
landmarks
The city counts around three million tourists a year. In summer the number of inhabitants doubles permanently to around 1,000,000. The 20-kilometer-long beaches are the city's tourist capital, there are hardly any architectural sights, apart from the creations of the villa architects from the early 20th century in the Los Troncos district . The most important church is the cathedral basilica of St. Peter and St. Cäcilia of the Roman Catholic diocese of Mar del Plata, which has been located here since 1957 . Another attraction is the nightlife, with the largest casino in Argentina as well as several theaters, variety shows and discos.
Culture
In summer a large part of the cultural scene shifts from the relatively close Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata. The Mar del Plata International Film Festival in November is the most important in Argentina and one of the most famous in Latin America.
economy
The tourism determines the economy and has led to a dependency of the population of high visitor numbers. In the Argentina crisis of 1998–2002, unemployment rose to 28 percent and significantly more people moved to the slums. Since foreigners have increasingly moved to Argentine holiday resorts because of the low prices since the peso was devalued, the city's economy has been significantly better since 2002. Another important branch of the economy in addition to tourism is fishing. The city also has an industrial park west of the city center near the neighboring city of Batán ; The food industry (especially fish processing), the production of agricultural machines, electronics, textile and packaging industries are leading.
Geography and climate
Mar del Plata is located on the South Atlantic Ocean , at the foot of the low Sierra de los Padres , a part of the Tandilia - Sierrensystems . The area belongs to the Pampa region. The climate is markedly oceanic without significant temperature extremes and relatively humid.
