Rawson is the capital of the Chubut Province in southern Argentina . The city is located on the banks of the Río Chubut near its confluence with the Atlantic Ocean, not far from the Valdés peninsula and today has around 27,000 inhabitants. It is by far the smallest provincial capital of Argentina, even within the province it is surpassed by four cities ( Comodoro Rivadavia , Trelew , Puerto Madryn and Esquel ). The name Rawson goes back to the Interior Minister Guillermo Rawson, in whose honor the place was named.
history
On September 15, 1865, the city was founded by Welsh immigrants in the middle of an area still dominated by the Tehuelche Indians at that time . The city thus had a military significance and was proclaimed the capital of Chubut, which was then still a national territory, in the year it was founded. However, the salty soil prevented the emergence of a successful agricultural colony, so that the town was soon overtaken by its neighboring town of Trelew , which today is the center of the region in almost every respect.
In 1957, the Chubut National Territory was raised to a province and Rawson was named provincial capital.
tourism
Seven kilometers east of the city, near the port, is the tourist resort of Playa Unión .
