Puerto Madryn (pronunciation [ ˈpwe̞ɾt̪o ma̠ð̞ˈɾin ]) is a city in southern Argentina . It lies on the Golfo Nuevo to the south of Peninsula Valdés , a UNESCO - World Heritage , on the Atlantic coast in about Patagonia belonging Province of Chubut .

With 81,995 inhabitants (2010) Puerto Madryn is the third largest city in the province. It is the capital and the only major town in the Biedma department , with 99 percent of the department's population. The area of the urban area is 360 km².

geography

The city lies at the foot of the Patagonian Meseta, which slopes down to the sea in the Golfo Nuevo in the form of a natural amphitheater. North to the Gulf, the peninsula includes Valdés on, a world-famous nature reserve (since 1999 UNESCO - World Heritage ), on the wildlife of the coast still largely intact ( sea lions , whales , penguins , seals , various species of birds). The vegetation is sparse in the entire area and is characterized by the Monte , a steppe-like bush landscape.

The climate is temperate and dry. It is mainly characterized by the strong winds, the Pamperos , which blow from the southwest. The summer is warm with an average temperature of 21 ° C in January (daily extremes 27/16 ° C) and the winters are cool with 8 ° C in July (daily extremes 13/3 ° C). The sunshine duration is high all year round, which makes the city suitable as a seaside resort; In addition, the water temperatures are higher in summer than in the coastal towns of the province of Buenos Aires further north due to the warm Brazilian Current .

history

The city was founded in 1865 by immigrants from Wales . At the end of the 19th century, the place was connected by a railway line (now closed) with the neighboring town of Trelew to the south-west inland , where intensive agriculture is practiced; the products were shipped in Puerto Madryn. Around 1970, however, a slump in the city's activity was recorded due to an unfavorable customs policy; its importance as a port declined. Since then, Puerto Madryn's economy has multiplied, with industry (especially aluminum production ) and tourism growing. The city has since recovered from its collapse and has seen high population growth.

education

There is a branch of the Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia in the city that offers location-specific courses such as marine biology and fisheries engineering. The CENPAT educational institute is also located here, where conventions and other events take place.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is particularly important as the location of the only aluminum producer in the country, Aluar , and as a center of fishing and tourism in the province. In terms of tourism, Puerto Madryn is important as a starting point for tours on the Valdés peninsula with its intact fauna and as a seaside resort. Especially as a diving metropolis, Puerto Madryn has also made a name for itself internationally. In 2011 the city had 7,404 hotel beds.

The small El Tehuelche Airport ( IATA code : PMY ) connects Puerto Madryn with Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina by air . In the wider area of the city is the larger airport Almirante Marcos A. Zar near the city of Trelew .
