Nefyn is a small town and civil parish on the north-west coast of the Lleyn Peninsula ( Pen Llŷn ) in County Gwynedd , Wales . Around 80% of the population use Welsh as their first language.

History and etymology

The history of the area can date back to 300 BC. To be traced back. At this time the Iron Age Hillfort Garn Boduan was built , which towers over the place. The remains of 170 round stone huts and wall fragments can still be seen on the 280 m high hill. There is written evidence from the late 11th century, where Nefyn appears in an account of the Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Cynan . In 1284 Edward I of England held a tournament to celebrate his victory over the Welsh, from the 14th century the town had municipal rights and was an important trading center. Nefyn's economy was largely based on fishing, especially herring , so it has three herrings in its coat of arms.

St Mary's parish church maritime museum

St Mary's parish church was built in the 6th century and renovated in 1827. This parish church was a stop on the pilgrimage to Ynys Enlli ( Bardsey Island , see also Avalon ). Today it is home to the Nefyn Maritime Museum.

The place name is derived from the Gaelic goddess Nebhain ( Irish female name Nevin - "admirer of the deity"), which, like the name of the Llŷn peninsula (Irish Laighin , same root as the Irish province of Leinster ) on the settlement by Irish clans in 4th and 5th century indicates. An ancient Welsh saint Nyfain is also known.

During the Second World War , the Royal Air Force set up a radar station near Nefyn (code name Chain Home ).

Two earthquakes , on December 12, 1940 and July 19, 1984, caused only minor damage to property, but the place suffered two deaths in the first.
