The Eisteddfod ([ ə (i) stɛðvɔd ], plural eisteddfodau [ ə (i) stɛðvɔda (ɨ) ], of Welsh eistedd "sit" and bod "to be") is a festival of literature, music and singing in Wales . The tradition of this artist get-together goes back to the first ice eddfod in Cardigan in the 12th century, but has since been almost forgotten. It was not revived until the 18th century as part of romantic movements and the awakening Welsh national consciousness.

There is the so-called National Eisteddfod (Eisteddfod Genedlaethol) , which is held annually in the first week of August alternately in the south and north of Wales. It is held in Welsh only, and an honor or award at an Eisteddfod is a great honor for the artist. The location of the National Eisteddfod is announced in the previous year, together with the publication of the topics and texts.

For young people between the ages of 7 and 24 there is the Eisteddfod yr Urdd , organized by the youth association Urdd Gobaith Cymru , at which competitions for singers, performers, dancers, musicians and actors are held. It takes place regularly in different locations during the summer holidays, and every four years in Cardiff .

Internationally best known is the International Eisteddfod , which takes place every year in Llangollen . Choirs, folk dance groups and other artists from all over the world take part here. It has been held since 1947 and is one of the world's largest events of its kind. In 2004 it was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize - albeit unsuccessfully .

The Eisteddfod is organized and hosted by the Welsh Bards Association Gorsedd Cymru (Welsh for Gorsedd of Wales). One of the most famous members of the Gorsedd since August 2002 has been the former Archbishop of Wales and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams .
