Llanelli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Llanelli [ ɬaˈnɛɬi ] is a coastal town in the county of Carmarthenshire , Wales . It is located approximately eight miles from Swansea , the second largest Welsh city.

history

Previously only a small town, Llanelli grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries through coal and mining, and a little later through the steel industry.

The closing of the coal mines and tough global competition from steel producers led to an economic slump for Llanelli in the late 1970s, as it did for many other cities in South Wales.

In 1966, Schaeffler opened a factory for the manufacture of needle roller bearings in Llanelli . In November 2018, Schaeffler announced that the plant in Llanelli will be closed “in the medium term” as a result of the upcoming Brexit .

Residents

In 2001, according to the census, there were 44,465 people in Llanelli.

The residents are sometimes referred to as Turks . One explanation for this could be that many Turkish seafarers headed for the city's port during their previous voyage.

Culture and sport

Llanelli hosted the Eisteddfod , a Welsh festival of literature, music and song , five times (1895, 1903, 1930, 1962, 2000) . Llanelli is a stronghold of the sport of rugby union ; The Scarlets team plays in the Pro12 professional league and plays their home games in Parc y Scarlets .
