Byron Stevenson

William Byron Stevenson (born September 7, 1956 in Llanelli , Wales, † September 6, 2007 ibid) was a Welsh football player.

The midfielder, who could also be used as a defender, began his football career in 1972 as a youth at Leeds United . He remained loyal to this club until 1981 and completed 95 league games in which he scored four goals. He then played for four years at Birmingham City . In 73 league games he came on three goals. His career ended with the Bristol Rovers , for whom he played in the 1985/86 season, running 31 times and scoring three goals.

For the national team of Wales he came from 1978 to 1982 on fifteen international appearances. In addition, he recorded various youth assignments. Stevenson became known when he was sent off in a European Championship qualifier in 1979 after he smashed the cheekbone of his Turkish opponent. A four and a half year ban for European Championship games was imposed on him, which may have cost him more international appearances.

Stevenson died of cancer the day before his 51st birthday. A minute's silence was observed in his honor on the occasion of the European Championship qualifier Wales - Germany on September 8, 2007 in Cardiff .
