The steam locomotive series BBÖ 409 was an express train - steam locomotive series of the BBÖ , which was created by reconstruction from the former kkStB series 9 .
Karl Gölsdorf designed series 9 of the kkStB for hilly stretches , with the performance of which one was not satisfied.
The BBÖ therefore rebuilt 19 of them between 1922 and 1928. The converted machines were given the designation 409 . The reconstruction was carried out by the StEG locomotive factory . The locomotives were converted into superheated steam twin locomotives , whereby the stiff control was replaced by a Lenz valve control. Otherwise, the outside of the machines remained unchanged, and the monstrous steam collector was also retained. The power of the machines was now 1200 hp and they could move 305 t trains at 50 km / h over 10 ‰. They were mainly used on the Gesäuse and Ennstal routes.
The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over eleven more in 1938 as 17,601–611 and retired six by 1945. After the Second World War , five remained in Yugoslavia and were initially designated as JDŽ 03-101–105 , from 1948 JDŽ 110-001 "–005" . These numbers had previously been assigned to earlier SB 110s .
