List of locomotives on the Austrian Northwest Railway and the South-North German Link Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of locomotives of the Austrian Northwest Railway and the South-North German Connection Railway provides an overview of the locomotives of the kk privileged Austrian North-West Railway (ÖNWB) and the kk privileged South-North German Connection Railway (SNDVB). Also included are the locomotives of the local railways, which were operated on behalf of the owners.

Own locomotives from ÖNWB and SNDVB

At the SNDVB, the locomotives were given consecutive numbers and names according to the order in which they were procured. The locomotives were also classified in the same way at the ÖNWB. In the course of the joint operating agreement, a common number and series scheme was introduced in 1872. Names were only given until 1874. Only the machines of the series  IIb and  IIc received the names and the numbers of the retired locomotives of the series  IIa .

The following rows were present in the common scheme:

  • Row I: express train locomotives
  • Row II: SNDVB passenger locomotives
  • Row III: ÖNWB passenger locomotives
  • Row IV: SNDVB freight locomotives with three coupled axles
  • Series V: ÖNWB freight locomotives with three coupled axles
  • Row VI: SNDVB freight locomotives with four coupled axles
  • Row VII: ÖNWB freight locomotives with four coupled axles
  • Series VIII, IX and X: Local and shunting locomotives from SNDVB and ÖNWB

The numbers originally intended:

  • 1–100: passenger locomotives
  • 101–200: Freight locomotives with three coupled axles
  • 301–: Freight locomotives with four coupled axles

Numbers from 200 were intended for future three-couplers, numbers over 400 for future four-couplers. The Ct series X received 500 numbers. The 2C passenger locomotives were given numbers from 601, the 2C express locomotives from 701. In fact, however, there were many deviations from these guidelines.

The lowercase letter a was used to identify twin, b to that of compound machines . The XVI series only had compound machines, so only variant b existed. According to the deliveries from different locomotive factories, additional lowercase letters were used to differentiate between them.

Locomotives of the local railways operated on behalf of the owners

With the takeover of operational management, the locomotives of the local railways also came into the operating fleet of SNDVB and ÖNWB. The numbers of the local railway locomotives were given separate number ranges for each owner, supplemented by an identification letter for the owner. For example, the L stands for the owner Ö L EG, M for the local railway M elnik – Mscheno. The only exception were the locomotives of the Kuttenberger local railway , which had the factory numbers assigned by the manufacturer as their company numbers.
