List of Mecklenburg locomotives

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains an overview of the Mecklenburg locomotives , based on the designation scheme of the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway .

Designation of the locomotives

The private Mecklenburg Railway Company and the state-owned Friedrich-Franz Railway assigned numbers and names to their locomotives from the start. When choosing a name, reference was usually made to geographical objects in Mecklenburg. After the merger of the two companies in 1873, the locomotives of the Mecklenburg Railway Company that had been taken over were numbered according to the locomotives of the Friedrich Franz Railway. The renumbering took place after 1879. While the numbering was originally in the order in which it was procured, a new numbering plan was introduced after the nationalization in 1895. Each genus was assigned a specific range of numbers. At the same time, naming was given up.

After the second nationalization of the Friedrich-Franz-Eisenbahn, the Grand Ducal Mecklenburgische Friedrich-Franz-Eisenbahn categorized the locomotives into different classes from 1890 onwards.

  • I – VII: passenger locomotives
  • VIII – X: Freight locomotives
  • XI – XVIII: tank locomotives
  • XIX: narrow gauge locomotives
  • XX: Freight locomotive
  • XXI: tank locomotive

In 1910 a new scheme was introduced that was essentially based on the Prussian system. The generic designations P (passenger locomotives), G (freight locomotives) and T (tank locomotives) were introduced. Individual series were distinguished by the following Arabic number. Superscript numbers were used to differentiate between sub-types. It was planned to assign a "1" to locomotives with simple steam expansion and a "2" to composite steam locomotives .
