With the nationalization of the Munich-Augsburger Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1844, its eight English locomotives were taken over by the State Railways while retaining their names.

State railways locomotives

Designation of the state railway locomotives

Names and numbers of the locomotives

The locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways were given names from the start. The locomotive name was to be read in raised capital letters on a brass plate attached to the long side of the boiler or, in the case of tank locomotives, to the water box.

To name the locomotives, names of Bavarian and non-Bavarian places, rivers, lakes and mountains, names of important personalities from art and science as well as literary and mythological figures were chosen. Animal names were also used to a limited extent.

Examples: BAVARIA, WÜRZBURG, ALTMÜHL, FUNTENSEE, WATZMANN, COPERNICUS, FAUST, ODYSSEUS, PANTHER

Locomotives with names were also given a so-called inventory number, which was attached in small digits to the chimney and the rear wall of the tender or, in the case of tank locomotives, to the rear wall of the driver's cab.

Inventory numbers were continuously assigned to newly hired locomotives, regardless of class or type. Names and inventory numbers of decommissioned locomotives were usually transferred to newly delivered machines. The name tags were reused.

Example: The C IV PASING 113 built in 1889 was given the name and inventory number of an AV that had been retired the year before .

The last time names and inventory numbers were given in 1892. The state railroad then switched to train or operating numbers, with locomotives of the same class or type being assigned a certain consecutive number range. The allocation of the number ranges took place without any recognizable system. The number plates were designed in the same way and attached in the same place as the name plates.

Older classification scheme

The older classification scheme, introduced in 1847, divided the locomotives into five groups, identified by capital letters:

  • A - locomotives with one driven axle
  • B - locomotives with two coupled driving axles
  • C - locomotives with three coupled driving axles
  • D - tank locomotives
  • E - locomotives with four coupled driving axles

The locomotive types mentioned were designated with the following Roman numeral, assigned consecutively in the order in which they were put into service. No distinction was made according to the purpose of the locomotives.

Examples: BV (pronounced: "Be five") , D XI (pronounced: "De elf")

Since only three-axle locomotives with one, two or three driving axles were available at the time this designation system was introduced, the letters A, B and C were used logically. When tank locomotives were introduced in 1871, the use of quadruple coupled locomotives was not yet conceivable, so the tank locomotives were assigned the class letter D. When four-coupler freight locomotives appeared towards the end of the 19th century, they had to be labeled EI - inappropriately.

The system was expanded in 1896 when locomotives with split engines were introduced:

  • AA - Locomotive with pre-tensioning axle (locomotive with one driving axle and removable auxiliary axle for starting)
  • BB - Mallet locomotives with two doubly coupled engines

Examples: AA I , BB II

To differentiate between twin and compound locomotives, the following was added to the class designation in the case of classes B XI and C IV:

  • Zw for locomotives with twin engines
  • Vbd (also Vb or Verb) for locomotives with compound engines

Examples: B XI Zw , C IV Vbd

These additions were not written on the locomotives themselves.

The narrow-gauge locomotives for what was then the only narrow-gauge line operated by the state railways were out of the scope of the scheme. These were the abbreviation LE (for L okalbahn E provided ichstätt) and with roman numbering from I to V. In addition, these locomotives also had inventory numbers.

Newer classification scheme from 1901

Due to the technical development and the requirements of the company, the scheme was no longer sufficient, so that a new system was introduced from 1901.

This consisted of several parts:

A leading capital letter denoted the locomotive type:

  • S - express train locomotive
  • P - passenger locomotive
  • G - freight locomotive
  • R - shunting locomotive
  • M - motor vehicle
  • E - electric drive (from 1913, placed in front of the locomotive type)

The locomotive type could be supplemented by one or more additional letters:

  • t - tank locomotive (was not used in shunting locomotives)
  • z - cogwheel locomotive
  • s - narrow-gauge locomotive
  • L - local railway

This was followed by the specification of the ratio of the coupling axles to the total number of axles in the form of a fraction z. B. 3/5.

To distinguish between hot and wet steam locomotives within the same class, an “H” or “N” was placed at the end of the designation.

Examples:

  • So called S 3/6 (pronounced "three sixths It") , a S chnellzuglokomotive with three coupled and a total of 6 axes - thus three axles.
  • The Pt 2/5 N is a P ersonenzug t Locomotive with a 2 coupled and a total of 5 axes - that is, three axles - in the N aßdampfausführung.
  • EP 3/5 denotes an e lectric P ersonenzuglokomotive with 3 driven axles and a total of 5 axles - two carrying axles.

The new designation system was only applied to the newly commissioned locomotives. Thus, until 1926, two different designation systems existed side by side, as the Bavarian Group Administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn retained the Bavarian numbering until the implementation of the uniform designation system for all Reichsbahn locomotives (in a modified, simplified form for electric traction vehicles).

Conversion of Bavarian steam locomotives by the Deutsche Reichsbahn and Deutsche Bundesbahn

Locomotives of two Bavarian types were subjected to a major renovation by the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn . Although the conversions took place decades after the end of the Bavarian State Railroad , these locomotives had unmistakably Bavarian construction features and were also referred to in official railway documents with (unofficial) Bavarian generic names.

Railcar

After the Bavarian State Railroad tested a Krauss steam railcar as early as 1882 , but did not take it over into its inventory, a small number of railcars were only put into service after 1900.

Locomotives of the Bavarian Eastern Railway

Designation of the Ostbahn locomotives

The naming scheme of the Bavarian Eastern Railway was based on that of the State Railway. The locomotives were divided into five groups, which were also identified by capital letters.

  • A - locomotives with one driven axle
  • B - locomotives with two coupled axles and a running axle
  • C - locomotives with three coupled axles
  • D - tank locomotives
  • E - locomotives with two coupled axles without running axle

The Ostbahn, however, did not distinguish between individual types by means of a special type number. Instead, the locomotives were numbered consecutively within a group. After the nationalization in 1875, the former Ostbahn locomotives were initially operated by the State Railways under their old numbers; it was not until 1892 that it was renamed to the state railway's designation system.

The first delivered locomotives A 1 – A 12 and B 1–6 were given names of cities and rivers from the traffic area of the Ostbahn. After that, the assignment of locomotive names was given up.

Former Ostbahn locomotives were fitted with stronger wheel tires by the Bavarian State Railways, so that in later years the wheel diameters were up to 40 mm larger. Locomotives of the classes C III (Ostbahn) and D IV (Ostbahn) were included in 1923 under the numbers 53 7834-53 7868 and 88 7021-88 7026 in the preliminary re-drawing plan of the Deutsche Reichsbahn for Länderbahn locomotives , but there was no definitive re-drawing.
