Bavarian PtL 2/2

Model of the Bavarian PtL 2/2 (3rd series without jackshaft) from Trix

The locomotives of the class PtL 2/2 of the Bayerische Staatsbahn were light and compact superheated steam locomotives for operation on local railways . There were a total of three designs, two of which came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and even the Deutsche Bundesbahn as the 98 3 series .

All types had the B wheel arrangement in common , the semi-automatic bulk firing, which allowed one-man operation, and circumferences with handrails that enabled safe access to the wagon train at the front and rear. The locomotives had a large driver's cab with three windows on each side, which enclosed the entire boiler except for the smoke chamber . This peculiarity earned the locomotives in southern Bavaria the nickname “ glass box” , in Franconia they were called “ glass chaise ”.

In 1905 and 1906 Krauss delivered three locomotives each (rail number 4501-4506) with an internal engine located within the frame and between the axles. The machines of 1906 had a cylinder diameter increased from 285 to 305 mm. The two axles were driven by a jackshaft and external coupling rods. In contrast to the more well-known later version, the water boxes of these "original glass boxes" were arranged above the circulation, but in such a way that a transition to the wagon train was still possible on both sides.

An alternative to this locomotive was the class ML 2/2 , which was built by Maffei.

In 1923, the provisional redesignation plan of the Reichsbahn still contained all six locomotives as 98 301 - 98 306; however, they were retired that same year. The reason for this was the internal engine, which was difficult to access during maintenance work.

In 1908 and 1909 Krauss delivered 29 locomotives, which now had a conventional external engine, but which operated on a jackshaft arranged between the axles. They received the track numbers 4507 - 4535. This engine made it possible to arrange the water tank below the boiler in the frame so that the circulation could be made more spacious.

Three more locomotives of this design were procured by the Prussian State Railways in 1910 and classified in the separate class T 2 as Altona 6081 and 6082 and Elberfeld 6041 (not included in the data table). The Altona 6081 and Altona 6082 locomotives were procured for use as a one-man motor locomotive on the north Schleswig routes around Tondern, which belonged to Denmark from the end of 1918.

In 1911 and 1914 two further deliveries of nine and four locomotives (numbers 4536-4548) were made to the Bavarian State Railways. With these, the jackshaft was dispensed with and the wheelbase was shortened from 3,200 mm to 2,700 mm. These locomotives were also a bit shorter and lighter overall than the models built up to 1909.

This type of machine was the first locomotive with a superheated steam engine in Bavaria.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over 22 locomotives with the numbers 98 301 - 98 322. Nine of them came from the first series with jackshaft.

Whereabouts

Two locomotives were sold to industrial companies in 1942, one was a victim of the Second World War and the 98 304 remained in Austria after the war. It was classified as ÖBB 688.01 by the Austrian Federal Railways . The single piece was taken out of service in 1959.

The remaining locomotives came to the Deutsche Bundesbahn , where most of them were decommissioned during the 1950s. The 98 307 was used between Spalt and Georgensgmünd until 1963 and was known as Spalter Bockerl . It has been preserved and is on loan from the Nuremberg Transport Museum in the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt - Wirsberg , but is no longer operational. The PtL 2/2 with the road number 4515 has belonged to the Nuremberg Transport Museum since 1925 . The cut locomotive fell victim to the great fire of October 2005 in the Nuremberg main station and is now in the DB Museum Koblenz after being successfully refurbished .

98 321

The 98 321 came to the Verden-Walsroder Railway via a locomotive dealer and the Lower Saxony State Railway Authority . For this purpose, it had been rebuilt at Krupp in 1947 : the fittings were moved to the back of the standing boiler and housed in a normal driver's cab, the bulk coal furnace was switched to normal firing through a fire door. The completion in Verden took until 1950 before it went into operation as locomotive 298. Two former air tanks were installed on the circuit as additional water tanks. The operating time was only short, however, as early as 1956 the locomotive was shut down and sold to a scrap dealer.
