The DB Museum Koblenz is a railway museum that opened on April 21, 2001 in Koblenz as the first branch of the Nuremberg Transport Museum . It is run by volunteers as part of the Bahn-Sozialwerk Foundation (BSW) and has its origins in the BSW leisure group for the maintenance of railway vehicles that were previously in operation . The focus is on historic Deutsche Bundesbahn locomotives . The permanent exhibition also includes old steam locomotives and saloon cars . At special events there are also vehicle parades where vehicles can be seen that do not belong to this museum location. The exhibition shows, among other things, several locomotives of the series 103 , 110/113 , E 50 , E 44 , E 18 and E 16 , various diesel locomotives as well as several saloon cars of the special train from Joseph Goebbels , a pulpit car of the counter train of the Henschel-Wegmann train and the last Chancellor's car of the West German Federal Government.

Overall, the exhibition is dedicated to electric traction and saloon cars. However, there are also several steam and diesel locomotives on display, including a Prussian T 3 steam locomotive that has been restored under strict monument protection conditions and has been in a children's playground in Cologne's zoo for decades .

In addition to a few full-time employees of the Deutsche Bahn Foundation, the members of the BSW group for the preservation of historic rail vehicles are volunteers at the museum.

history

The museum is housed in the former repair shop for freight cars in the Neuendorf district. The facility was built in 1905 as part of the redesign and expansion of the Lützel freight station as the Koblenz-Lützel depot .

Originally the area comprised a large roundhouse with two turntables , in which the locomotives for freight trains were located, as well as the wagon hall , in which freight cars were repaired until 1995. After the dissolution in 1968, it now houses the vehicles of the DB Museum Koblenz. The old depot was dismantled in several sections by the early 1980s.

The vehicles are exhibited in the former wagon hall and in the outdoor area, the vehicle collection now includes well over 20 locomotives and railway wagons . The focus of the exhibition in Koblenz is electric traction and traveling by rail . In addition to the presentation of the exhibits, these topics are explained using image documents and models in the museum rooms.

Former exhibits

ET 30 014 was the last surviving copy. Since the condition was already so bad when it was retired, the unit was finally dismantled. Only the powered end car 430 414 could be saved and was handed over to the rail transport company (SVG).

The DB Museum Koblenz owes four facilities to the commitment of model railway builders from the BSW Group: a garden railway with a track width of 5 inches on a scale of 1: 11, two model trains in the scale H0 (two-wire direct current / TRIX Express ) and an LGB garden railway system . There are temporary demonstrations on all systems.

5 and 7.25 inch garden railroad (ride-on train)

Since 2009, the museum has had the “5 and 7.25 inch track”, a garden railroad system with a track width of 127 mm (5 inches ) and 184 mm (7.25 inches). It is located in the outdoor area at the entrance and drives from there to the turntable and back. In mid-2009 the decision was made to build a permanent track system. This first 5 inch oval was completed in 2009 for the “ Long Night of the Museums ”. In spring 2010, the facility was expanded to include a second station track and two sidings . The extended system went into operation for Easter 2010 to mark the 175th anniversary of the railway in Germany . The extension to 300 meters went into operation in 2012. In 2015 the system was converted to the two-track system 5 and 7.25 inches, since 2016 trains with a gauge of 7.25 inches have also been able to run in Koblenz.

The total length of the route is around 300 meters. It consists of two connected turning loops and a four-track station with three sidings . In terms of rolling stock , the 5 inch replica locomotives Köf II , Köf III, V 100 and DE 2500, four wagons for transporting people and various models of goods wagons in 5 inches are available. In 7.25 inches there are 2 light rail locomotives and 4 cars for the transport of people as well as 2 control cars.

TRIX Express

The TRIX Express Club Germany e. V. is an association whose aim is to maintain and cultivate the Trix Express hobby as well as to stimulate the Trix Express friends' passion for collecting and to further spread the Trix Express model railway hobby in the form of regulars and Trix days. Its club rooms are housed in the DB Museum Koblenz-Lützel.

Garden Railway (LGB)

The LGB garden railway system has been in operation since 2005. It is to be expanded further in the future and will ultimately cover an area of ​​over 100 square meters.

In April 2010, as part of the 175th anniversary of the railway in Germany, trips with the eagle, which was reconstructed in 2007, were carried out with visitors on the grounds of the DB Museum in Koblenz-Lützel .
